I prefer "black" kettle because my black friends get annoyed when they're not called black but instead are called using a politically correct drawn-out long term *coughafricanamericancough*

Updated Idea ^___^ because you all gave a piece of suggestion
And yes I did screw up the order in which the Defcons go earlier ><

Mode: Sudden Death
Scoring: default
Defcon 5- default level at the start of the game
Placement, radar can already detect enemy bases
Defcon 4- Once 75 percent of bases have been placed
Allows naval combat, fighter/bomber launches, continued placement, all that jazz
Defcon 3- Timed. A long time after Defcon 4
Allows bomber nukes to be launched
Defcon 2- Timed. A relatively short time after Defcon 3
Allows submarine nukes to be launched
Defcon 1- After 65 percent of all non-silo nukes have been launched
Forces all silos into launch mode

Now go! Detect the errors in this mode XD

This is a problem, as I see it. If all of the silos are in launch mode, then everyone is vulnerable. That means that there is an advantage to everyone launching the instant that they can, so they can get their silos backing into defense mode. A major aspect of the strategy of the game -- timing your launches -- is ruined. I don't like it.

Maybe you don't like it but that's kinda the point of the my suggested mode :D

The skill is to predict which targets your competitors are launching at and which ones they're not, then shoot accordingly. You could end up with 20 nukes hitting Cairo from different nations, it sounds really fun to me. And most of the tactics come before Defcon 1, where you place your bombers and subs waiting for the inevitable mass-launch.

Once again, I say try Orgazmo. I think it'll satisfy this urge quite nicely.

Not only do I not like it, I think that is kind of defeats the stated goal of Defcon -- to create an RTS that is unlike other RTSes. This is just another zerg rush.

I've been playing a fair amount of SC recently, and remembering why I stopped playing it. n00bs throw lings at you like there is no tomorrow, which is just annoying, as it doesn't help them to win.

Isn't that the point of the Zerg though?

And I was just starting to warm up to the idea of "adaptive Defcon", thanks xander.

Couldn't that just be solved by not allowing any progress from a person with "incomplete" units? Other players could still get the game to progress, but players who don't place anything can only react to the current level of Defcon. ??

I might be a few days late on this but ...

One way to get Escalation DEFCON to work in a balanced way would be to penalise the escalating player without unduly penalising the other(s).

For example, the player who escalates loses the privileges of the previous DEFCON level (unit placement etc) &/or doesn't gain the benefit of the next DEFCON level (in particular the ability to escalate further) for a countdown period. The other players either retain the previous privileges for a countdown period ("Doomsday timer initiated") &/or immediately gain the benefits of the next DEFCON level.

Another penalty could be advertising the location of the escalating act to all other players (similar to nuke launch currently)

A more "peaceful" way to escalate could be for players to vote on raising the DEFCON level. Like the speed control, unanimity would be required to raise the DEFCON level - and that way everyone would be ready and no-one penalised for escalating.

Anyway, enough of that. By way of introduction, I've been lurking around the forums and playing a few games a week the Mac version came out. Currently preferring 1v1, diplomacy or survivor game. /thinks - what forum should musings on non-zero-sum games go on?

Cheers - Tripper
