Imagine a player who sets up a couple of silos, starts moving some ships around, launches some fighters and nukes, and does it before anyone else can even place their units. It becomes a game in which the fastest person to place the most units wins.

In short:

zerg rush kekekekekekeke

And I was just starting to warm up to the idea of "adaptive Defcon", thanks xander.

Couldn't that just be solved by not allowing any progress from a person with "incomplete" units? Other players could still get the game to progress, but players who don't place anything can only react to the current level of Defcon. ??

You could still place very fast, and launch. Most of the high level players put their buildings into formations, and break their fleets up into little pieces. If you placed all of your ships in 6 ship fleets, randomly placed your units, &c, you could get your shit off much faster than anyone else.

zerg rush doesn't mean "victory" though.

Ok, serious answer now, a buttion to push when you are ready to progress to Defcon 4. You could still place buildings and such afterwards, but I think its a fair warning the world is about to go beyond your control. (And there is always using real time to place your things)

No, but it is fucking annoying. Also, one of the things that IV have stated about Defcon is that it is an RTS that removes some of the conventional aspects of RTSes, like rushes, for instance.

So what's the big deal? They don't look too threatening to me, and those four swashbuckler-type chappies don't seem too concerned either. I say, bring your rushes, bring your pampas grasses and bring your other plant-based offensives, for I have a big scythe!

Erm.

And yeah, you could have a timer that kicks in after everyone's placed their units that signals the start of the adaptive process- say 15 in-game minutes or something, to allow everyone to place freely and at their own speed, and then get an idea of what's going on, what their radar can already see, stuff like that- before they're able to undertake any action that would cause a change in Defcon status.

Those aren't rushes, those are sedges. There is an easy way to remember the difference: sedges have edges, rushes are round.

Oh the sweet sweet irony of someone on an online forum devoted to a RTS game that was inspired by a cult 1983 film about nuclear war calling another guy a nerd because he knows something about plants, i.e. the real world.

My mind boggles.
