Two and a half ideas for more cities

Postby NeoTrantor » Sat Nov 18, 2006 10:37 pm

Adding more cities can be done by patch, can't it? And it could always be a feature that's meant to be distinct from "classic" Defcon.

1. More cities. Just more cities for all regions. It has to be balanced, but that shouldn't be too hard to do, should it?

2. Special cities. Without making it too sim-like, how about having a few "hardened" places like NORAD, Norfolk Naval Base, or even Cape Canaveral that yields you special points if you kill them? The problem is, they are tougher to crack than normal cities.

2.5. Capitals. They mean nothing except if you damage it, you get more points. The default capital is the real-world place (Washington D.C., Moscow, the computer randomly picks one from the real-life capitals for the other regions), but you can select one for yourself.

how hard would it be to slap a special multiplier in casualties to these cities if hit by an ICBM?

Scoring methods for hitting certain cities sounds like a viable option, but the obvious effect of course would be players clustering their defenses to protect certain cities, rather than protect thier cities as a whole.

Then again, that particular problem can be overcome by randomizing the designated 'key cities'.

An idea worth discussing.

The point about these special cities is that they're also white elephants- they suck up precious defenses.

Watch what they do to the capitals in real life - they DEFEND them. And DEFCON's a quite realistic game - so do
not randomize that. This would finally be a withdrawal for Europe, as they'd have shitloads of capitals, and probably they wouldn't be 1st pick afterwards.

What'd you have is have ONE capital for each region. For Europe, you'd randomize from either all the capitals or all the real-life capitals that are represented in the games. Or you can just have Brussels be the capital.

For Asia, you'd randomize as well.

It would be idiotic to have more than one capital per region. I'm suggesting a MINOR idea, since anything ground-breaking is shot down on this forum, as well by the very nature of Defcon.

Aside from capitals, you can always modify some population levels for cities so killing them yields more points. Aren't they not based on real-life figures, anyway? If they're not based on real-life already, they you might as well tweak the numbers around.

It sounds interesting. To be honest, if WWIII broke out, capitals are really just as easy to nuke as anything else. The only exception would be Moscow, but that's because the Russkies loved having a nuke tipped ABM system there. The US would be more concerned with keeping NORAD and SAC in control while the UK would have the bunkers in the Cotswalds for COBRA. The rest of the EU, Africa, Asia and South America would be harder to determine, given none of them really was much of a nuke power in the Cold War, so we'd have to make something up.

Europe'd most probably try to defend good ol' Germany, as here is where most of the industry is standing. And because they are dependant on exports.

Just a li'il patriotism

Brussels is the EU capitOl, but Amsterdam is the 'social' capitol.

For some reason this is a capital A, but moscow is the Capitol of Russia, dont ask me why it is like that in english it just is.
See you guys learned something.

You are incorrect.

Capital refers to the city (in addition to the other, unrelated meanings of capital). Capitol refers only to the building, and has no other meaning.

Washington DC is the capital of the United States. United States Representatives and Senators meet in the Capitol Building.
