THE SERVER HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN

Postby Fyei » Sat Oct 21, 2006 10:58 pm

Sigh... my first post on the forum and its a ranting one. Nice.

Anyway, hullo all... just comin on to suggest a way that I feel that would improve the game.

How many games have ended because the host just got bored? I mean, ive just come out of a diplomacy game where all 6 sides after 2 hours of playing were having a right go at each other, it was one of the most tense games I have ever played, in revenge for my ally killing my submarine fleet I was about to fire all 6 silos at his capital cities and...!

THE SERVER HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN

Yeah... that was fun.

Why does the game have to shut down just because the host left? Why cant it be made so if the host leaves something else takes over? This has gotta be the first ever RTS/Whatever you wanna call this where if the host leaves, the entire thing is shut off.

Ive played a lot of games in my time where a host simply makes a game and then even if he leaves, the other players can continue. Why cant Defcon be made like this too?

Its really bloody annoying when this happens, which is... oohh, just about every 1/3 games. The only way to gaurentee a full, fun game is to host it myself... and that takes an age because everyone else is hosting their own too to stop hosts dropping them out.

Doesnt everyone agree?

I always host my own games for this same reason, it almost makes you scared to attack the server host in fear that they get pissed off and quit.

I tag my games - Serious Players Please. No speed bitching and no dropping out and whining, in return I host a game that will not shut down.

But I do agree, we either need a dedicated host system or a way to transfer host status upon other people.

Or failing that can a server not keep count of games where the host has quitted so we can judge whether they are likely to do so.

Utterly fed up of server disconnects

I'm hoping the devs eventually patch it to be more akin to most RTS games. Meaning that if the host drops, it doesn't affect everyone else.

I think that will only be able to easily happen when non-player servers arise. I don't know how easy it must be to switch hosts on the fly, but it must not be easy.

Nah, that already was in some Microsoft game or another, and you know how "much" work they put into each of their games.*

Alas, it's not the first game. Herzog Zwei, the first RTS ever (yes, earlier than Dune II and CnC, that's a very common misbelief) also featured this. Yes, along with multiplayer.

However, the guys at Introversion are intelligent, and I think with a game with mechanics as simple as DEFCON, this should work.

*No, I don't like Microsoft. They're one of the main reasons why I love bombing America.**

Yea plus one for that, I hate it when that happens. I lable my games No Disco. To show that I (the host) will not disconnect. I hate it when people do that to me.

It's annoying that the game dies when the host leaves.

However, I wouldn't expect this to change.

It would probably be a lot of work to recode this, to transfer the server to someone else.
Unless they start hosting dedicated servers, and there are business issues with that.

Other RTS games suffer from this as well. (Total Annihilation, in the past, is one that springs to mind).

Perhaps they could make a dedicated server port of defcon, the capability is pretty much there already, just need the host as a spectator, and a command line interface.
Then there could be dedicated server servers like in counter strike etc.
