Most desired patch upgrade?

Postby Chris » Sun Oct 15, 2006 3:06 pm

What upgrade would you most like to see added to Defcon?

Better MOD support
Ability to load and unload mods from inside the game
Game servers would advertise their currently running mod
Automatic activation/deactivation of MODs when joining a server
Central database of all known mods.
Designers could upload their latest mods to this database.

An organised Tournament
We have successfully run one Tournament so far, involving only the Beta testers.
You can see the format here.
We would expand this basic idea to allow for (maybe) 50 players, over 4 or 5 rounds, culminating in a six player Grand Final.
Some nice Prizes would be on offer.

Player Ranking / Matching system
Every player would have a score associated with their name.
A players score would go up or down depending on the results of each game.
Beating higher ranked players would earn more points than beating lower ranked players.
The ranks of all players would be viewable in a browser.
This system could also be used to match players of similar ability.

Map / Scenario editor
Tools to edit the world map and territory assignments.

Better AI Opponent
The in-game AI is essentially a training bot.
We could provide a number of different bots that play in different ways, with scalable difficulty.

Recording / Playback of games
At any point you could chose to save the game state and history.
This could be replayed at a later date, at any desired speed.
Additional benefits
-Recovery from Server crash (server simply reloads most recent auto-save, then clients rejoin as nomal)
-Save a game and come back to it later
-Watch games after play with all territories visible, at 100x normal speed
-We could provide saved replays for the Big tournament games

I guess better mod support, because I believe that the community will be strong enough to enrich the stock game with various modifications, perhaps some that would be so good that they would be added to the game itself via an official patch - as it has been the case with various other games.

Map editor comes second - it's relatively related to the mod support option, because although it is already possible to modify the map, an official "custom map" option would be really great. Sure, Defcon isn't a full-fledged strategy game, but trying out new options and ideas would be great - you wouldn't have to make up some maps, you could simply make ones based on a part of the real world, keeping the level of realism Defcon provides. For example, an European theater map - Eastern vs. Western europe, or some such.

Chris, Features need to be added.

1. Baring Strait should be made passable
2. when you quit a game it should take you back to the server menu not main
3. Subs should be able to fire nukes at land/unscouted land, like silos can, not just units emplacements and cities.

and on a less serious note i would like to see Bristol added to the core defcon map :P

There are loads of issues that are being considered, but they all count as small changes. Rather than make a poll with one hundred entries, ive listed what I believe to be the best six major upgrades that could be created for patch release.

I definatly want a save/replay game system! It'd be really useful to have some sort of fail-safe for a crash or loss of internet connection. And you'd be able to easily show off certain moves and find out what your opponent did in order to obliterate you so easily. Second to that would be mod support.

Something would be needed to make it impossible to watch a replay whilst the match is in progress though, otherwise the tournaments might suffer some cheating, albeit no more than can currently be done by using two PCs and one as a spectator.

A "join last IP connected too" button would be nice as well, if you guys hadn't thought of it yet (though I'm sure you have!!).

And I voted rankings by the way. I like showing off. :D

In order of preference: replays (but I don't think saves would add much)
Ranking system
Mod support
Map editor
AI
Tournament

I put Tournament last because surely one can already organise a tournament on our own? How would a patch make this any easier?

I would also like to see more stats like number of silos destroyed, nukes I shot down, nukes of mine shot down, who shot down who, things like that. Just more detail. Maybe one could click each player's name on the stat screen to see extended stats, like number of civilians killed in each territory, or even each city.

Another cool addition would be the ability to customise *everything*. Like the speed of nukes, rate of fire or fighters, number of ships, etc. So long as the defaults stay as they are it could add a new dimension to the game for experts.

I've got to admit, the first thing I care for at this point in time is a) more stability & performance, and b) a Linux version. (Assuming that the performance problems and so on are mostly inherent to the engine, I guess just a port wouldn't help me much.)

Personally, I would like to see them in the following order:
  1. Mac Version :P
  2. Player Ranking / Matching system
  3. Better MOD support
  4. Map / Scenario editor
  5. An organised Tournament
  6. Better AI Opponent
  7. Recording / Playback of games

I wish I could vote for two. I would vote for Mod Support and Demo Recording. THe demo recording though sounds absolutely brilliant. To be able to play the game back at 100x would let you see just where you made your mistakes and why you won or lost.

I chose mod support, but I see that no-one as yet has chosen tournaments. I would love to see official tournaments. So don't rule that one out :)

I'd love to have the recording option, that way classic battles could be shared online, and also so I can go back and learn from waht went right and wrong in a match.
