Hold launch until button is pressed.

Players should either be able to select a fleet of subs, carriers, what have you and get a total of all available nukes in that fleet, clicking until the number hits 0, followed by each ship launching more or less simultaneously; or they should be able to set up nuke orders as they currently do, clicking each individual sub and then clicking targets, and then tell the sub to hold on its orders until the player gives the signal. When the signal is given, all the subs will have reached the end of any MRBM arming timer while holding and will launch at the same time.

This would help players coordinate a specific fleet in speed defcon at the risk of waiting too long to get a nuke in the air.

Also, what if specific keys could be assigned to launch? Set fleet 1 up on its own key while fleet 2 has a seperate key. Press fleet 2's key to launch a volley from the back. When fleet 2's nukes are about to pass over, press fleet 1's key, signaling them to launch their volley.

Edit: The ability to give firing orders normally but then hold them until the fire command is given should probably be called "weapons queing" for further discussions.

Use real time to micro manage.

Notice how you have ages to select targets, then switch to 20x RT to see the mass carnage!
"Surely you didn't mean to press that button just then did you?"
"No, nor will i disarm the nukes."
"Oh well, I will have my Fighters shoot them down."
"Sure you will."
"Oh NOES, ITS BEEN PATCHED!!!"

That's what I always do in default. For other modes though, this would just be a nice way to do so when you either can't slow things or don't want to.

Plus, the fun of pressing a button to launch a volley is just fun!

FIRE 1 *press* FIRE 2!!! *press*. This would also give all those people wanting a big red button something to do with it. :)

palehorse864 makes a valid point.

Perhaps it would be nice to separate the "Target" command from the "Launch" command/action.
