Why not a seventh territory?

Postby aabbaa22 » Wed Oct 04, 2006 9:15 am

Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia would make an excellent territory both for their strategic location and size. Furthermore, it would give users an extra option should five territories already be selected. Simply erase some of the South Asian territory nearest to Australia and include some overlap with the new territorial waters.
As a side note, on the title screen in a list entitled ‘Strategic World Targets’ there seems to be a missing comma in the coordinates for Vladivostok.

Happy Birthday:
http://www.sykotech.com/DEFCON/Let-ANZAC-Join.rar

Use that to include Australia into the game.

BESIDES.

Naturally including them would bring about unbalance ( if a 7th region ) and if it were attached as shown in the above mod, it would make South Asia desirable.

I'm Aussie, and I'm semi-happy with the region choices, cuz in the end Europe is too small anyway. :)

( Mabye Australia should be part of Europe, cuz we are sorta bonded by the Queen and such. )

That would be awesome to have 2 seperate land masses, guess what im working on next. > _>

Napalm Sushi wrote:As it stands, territory wise, the game is set up like this:

----------------
| ::: | ::: | ::: |
| NA | EU | RU |

| ::: | ::: | ::: |
----------------

NA = North America
SA = South America
EU = Europe
AF = Africa
RU = Russia
CH = China/South Asia

A nice, neat, 6 x 2 arrangement, with everyone adjacent to everyone else, and everyone having exclusive access to their own open ocean region near the north or south pole.

If Oceania were playable, it would look like this:

----------------
| ::: | ::: | ::: |
| NA | EU | RU |
| ::: | ::: |----|
----------| ::: |
| ::: | ::: | CH |
| SA | AF |----|
| ::: | ::: | OC |
----------------

Where OC = Oceania

The far Eastern Hemisphere has suddenly become a crowded place. China now forms a buffer zone between Oceania and Russia, whilst being in the unique and unenviable position of being completely surrounded with no free ocean regions to it's north or south. The map has now been thrown totally off-balance.

Introversion are smart, and noticed the potential for this situation well before I just did. Do not doubt their wisdom :wink:

And my apologies if my little ASCII diagrams look screwed up on everyone else's screens. I did my best :oops:

Plus, if you nuked Australia, I'd have no where to build this:

Six is divisible by two and three, so 2, 4 and 6 player games can be had. Seven is a prime number so teams would always be unfair. That said, 3 good players v 4 average players would be fair so it goes to show how little I know.

The game almost always breaks down into individuals in the end, unless defection is not allowed, as people like to cram in those extra points to beat their teammate. :P

I hate being on the winning team and having the higher scoring team mate brag. :(

So yer, take em out quickly. :) ( Make sure u can handle it through. )

Interestingly, on the menu there's a list of places hit and casualties, and Singapore is one of them, but it's not in the game :(

Might I be the first to point out that Australia and New Zealand would make the least popular territory to play as? I mean, the fact that you would be barred from having nukes (they don't have any)...

Actually, I think that playing as Australia/New Zealand/Polynesia would prove an interesting challenge. The territory is really spread out, and made up of small islands (other than Australia). You wouldn't be able to place more than one silo/radar/airbase per island, but would have incentive to defend the entire area (assuming that cities were set up in such a way). When I start playing with the editor (when it comes out and I finish a couple of Darwinia projects), I will have to come up with a map that includes Oceania. I might have to elimiate Europe, though, or combine USSR and China -- it seems that the game only supports 6 players, max :)
