I made red get the Sukhoi and the other colors get the export JSF variant
It actually works pretty well--trying to stuff 3 fighters into a single icon has proven to be a bit distasteful, but just having 2 is actually pretty good
here are some screenshots
And the mod itself

awesome.
this mod raises the question - is it possible to do this with all of the icons?
we could finally see opposing factions having there own hardware!
for example, this could be a cold war themed icon set
NATO(blue)
bomber - Boeing B-52
fighter - McDonnell Douglas F-4
carrier - U.S.S. Nimitz
battleship - U.S.S. Massachusets
sub - Ohio class
Warsaw Pact(red)
bomber - Tupolev Tu-95
fighter - MiG-21
carrier - Admiral Kudsnestov
sub - typhoon class

It should be pointed out that we have long known that it is possible to use the subtractive coloration of units in the games to create different icons for different teams. This can be done with any unit in the game. The problems are that (a) the subtraction is not complete, so there is going to be a "ghost" unit, no matter what you do and (b) several of the team colors are a combination of two different colors, so you will have both unit icons superimposed upon each other.
So, short answer: it is possible, but not really worth it.

While xander is right, if mind is paid to the similarity of key points of the icons, it could still be done to a good effect
Like you could draw a hammer and sickle on one of the icons and have it mostly fade away in another.
I think the reason why the F-35/PAK thing works is that the planes are relatively similar in shape. It's not perfect, but it actually is pretty cool in most situations

As long as you aren't orange. ;)
And, to be clear, my goal was not to discourage anyone. Shit, I played around with the colors a lot early on because I thought it was a neat idea, and hellcatv has actually done a pretty good job of making it work. But if one is going to start playing around with the coloration of the icons, one should be prepared for the realities of modding Defcon. There are some interesting things that you can do, but they are not likely to ever work would perfectly.
On another note, mods like this can also cause problems when switching teams. All of your units will suddenly be transformed mid-flight. ;)
