Modding SpaceMonkeys Mod...

Postby tommowins » Wed Jan 21, 2009 2:54 pm

Am I allowed to mod Spacemonkeys Australasia mod without his permission and say that it was made by him and updated, futher modded by myself/anyone who wants to help. Basically I want to add some more cities 'cause the amount of people in some places are weirded up. I also want to change territory boudries. If you want me to be more specific, just ask...

If I have permission to go ahead, will anyone help me. Because I am useless at the computing stuff, but I have all the cities percentages of the population in that territory ready and as realistic as possible.

Cheers, TOMMO!!!! :o

P.S. I have PM'ed him and I have no reply...

There are no terms listed in the mod's readme, so how about you try contacting Spacemonkey, either via PM or through the e-mail provided in the readme.

Just replace the file cities.dat file with your own and make it an addon to the austraila map, then you dont need permission. And honestly, i dont think anybody would care anyway.
Cities.dat has a very straight forward format. Per city it lists name, longitute, latitute, population, capital (yes/no = 1/0), country.
Long/lat are in a dezimal format like 21,84398° not 21°50'45'' so you have to convert it. Here you can find long/lat for most cities (and pop too): http://www.geonames.org

The exact population is a bit useless anyway, because defcon will change the population so the sum of all city populations is 100 millions or whatever population is set to in defcon.

And all of the said is pretty obvious and you could have easiely figured out by yourself, if you just would have tried and used some common sense. But instead you asked a useless question, nobody can know the answer of.

Well sometimes you need to get peoples attention.

Sorry about the above post but hey, it worked. Thanks trickser your info helped me and I am gonna start editing now. One last thing, I added a couple of extra cities but at the moment only three are appearing per territory. eg. in New Zealand only Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch are showing when in cities.dat file I have Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Hamilton, Tauranga and Dunedin. Also I presume you edit using wordpad?

Regards,

Tom

A possible reason might be that the coordinates are a bit out of the defined land mass. Most cities in that area will be coastal cities, so it might be likely. You can edit the territory file included in the mod, make the land a little bigger. The cities will only show up if there is the right value of grey.

Another reason could be that simply cities per territory is set to 3. Check if the mod includes a gameoptions.txt file and change that value (25 would be default).

Any editor is fine. I dont know if it matters here, but adding a newline to the end of the file solves problems more often then you would think.
