1970s Cold War Leaders Mod

I'm working on a Cold War Mod.

I was going to make units for both the ruskies and the yankees,
but I cant do that, so I'm going for a 60s - 70s "style" untis.

These were my old units, but since evryonehas same units and colors, i gotta start from scratch..
here they are anyway.









The first 2 are my creations, the others are modefied versions from METAL SLUG and the MiG-21SMT Model diagram.

All I got at my disposal is Windows Paint.

Also, I'm new to this whole modding issue, so if there is a cold war mod out there, oh well.
If you want, feel free to draw your own little sprites to add to this Mod.
I'll give you credit ofcourse.
I'm trying to go for a more comical look of Yankees vs Ruskies.

Oh, btw, how can I convert mp3's into OGG files so to use in the Mod? (answered)


Anyways, I'm working also on a map that has the face of leaders on it... partial credit to trickser for inspiration and info.

Also, is it possible to make the heads get smaller as you zoom in?

I couldn't open the maps, so i just edited your (tricksers) existing mod, Deep Sea

also, having all heads bigger.. it's here.


I'm getting the feeling I'm doing something wrong...

Also Margaret Thatcher looks weird up close, i had to resize her head in order to fit europe.
I'm worried about city placements covering it up.... not to mention, silos, radars, and bases.
Having limited knowledge on modding, and only Paint, as my image tool... I feel like giving up.
Help would be most apriciated.

Hey it looks sweet, but you must keeps some things in mind.

1. every Icon will be tinted in the players colour, so using colored icons might look weird after all, but on the other side, maybe it works and you might have a modding 1st, like the moon landing.
2. every player (seen in your defcon client) uses the same icons. You cant have 1st players using russian units and 2nd player using USA units.
There might be a possibility involving following cues: tinting, addtive color mixing, complementary colors. Dont ask how, i just have a rough idea and i dont think it can work for more then 2 colors and Defcon uses 6.

For mp3 to ogg: decode mp3 to wav with almost any mp3 player, encode it using ogg-encoder. Well, just use google.

And for painting have a look at GIMP. Its free and feature rich.

I think I'm going to go a simpler way, by just doing 50's style Units, and icons.
I'm also thinking of putting the face of Khrushchev on USSR soil, and Kennedy on US land.(just the head.. I hope it will all be partly translucent.)

Also, US Blue Star and the Hammer and Sickle on Russia...

But I don't have a World Map Template which I can Edit.

Unpack main.dat from your Defcon folder with Winrar. Change the extension to rar before. The files graphics/water.bmp and water_shaded.bmp are the map you see in the game, depending if you selected shaded water or not in the graphics menu. Just edit them. You can also up the resolution to add more detail, just keep the aspect ratio.You also can make them colored.

Cuz maybe I can Make their faces the 2 Continents.. and only 2.

To change land/water ditribution you have to edit earth/sailable.bmp.
But that will make your mod critical, means every player has to use it. With the relativly low player base its very unlikely a multiplayer game with a critical mod will ever happen.

All files in earth/ are critical, better dont touch them for you 1st modding attempt.
And i suggest, like i always do, dont mix graphical changes with critical ones if not really necessary. It just makes your mod harder to use.

I renamed it Main.rar, but it did nothing... I'm running XP-pro.
when i opened it in notepad, which was it's original viewing, I saw all the files, I tried saving it as rar, but it didn't work either.

Dont rename it into rar, it is unnesessary. Just open main.dat with winrar and then extract. Dont open it in notepad.

Your mod looks alright


I cant think of a way to make the faces scale when you zoom in.
Why not make the potrais even bigger? Thatcher is hard to see, and there is no reason why it cant be on the water.

Can you open the main.dat file? Downloaded and intalled WinRar? Or whats your problem with editing the map files (besides from using Paint ) ?
