I still have a bit of work to do, but here are some screen shots.

One problem is the player colours show up very light on the background, can sometimes make units hard to see, I may mess around with the styles a bit to see what I can do.

Yes, I discovered that the game favours dark background somewhat. Infact when I was messing around with stars and galaxy backgrounds, units would just go missing in any bright areas. If I could have forced everyone to have the same style settings then it would have been a brilliant way to camouflage units. Also the units would sometimes appear to swap sides depending on the colour of certain areas of background.

But did they use atomics? I don't think they ever did after the Butlerian Jihad whilst blowing up Old Earth.

Paul...

Unless I am really crazy, doesn't Paul revitalize the use of Atomics to destroy the Shield Wall around Arrakeen, so that he can get some Worms in? I know the movie is like this, but it has been far too long since I read the book.

I think that was the main difference from the book. In the book 'weirding' meant some sort of martial art or fighting style. I think it was nukes that blew up the wall though.

Besides the difficulty in seing the models, this mod look very promising.

I got some suggestions: Instead of towns or cities, it could be spice silo's

Make the submarine model a infantry model, as that can explain the invisibility (camouflaged soldiers), and soldiers plays a huge role in the dune universe

Thread necromancy.... tis an ugly thing....

On the other hand, check the Defcon Modlist (now back up) for the mod called "Dune: The Battle for Arrakis". It's not so much ground-based as planet-based, but I put a little bit of work into it.
