A Polar projection would be nice

Postby Tribalbob » Thu Oct 12, 2006 9:01 am

I tried to make one, but i've been pretty retarded for the past few weeks and couldn't really deal with the map editing stuff. I drew up the bmp's but couldn't really get them working in game properly, and gave up.

as you can see, it puts asia in a REALLY interesting spot. on the one hand, it can't feasibly attack the americas if it's not allied with russia (or possibly europe.)

on the other hand, it can't BE attacked by the americas unless they're allied with russia.

europe is in a similair situation as well. to a degree, it neds african approval.

russia can attack anyone, but can also be attacked by anyone.

this could lead to some very interesting diplomatic and tactical situations.

that coldwar one is excellent, though africa, australia and the other countries on the edge would have to be biffed as they won't tile seamlessly

The player countries don't have to be the same as in Defcon, we could change it around a bit to make it more even.

As for the edges of the map, i'll guess it will have to wrap around, going to be a weird looking map.

at least folks won't be able to complain about not being able to fire over the southpole (hence the wrapping)

Can somebody explain shortly what are you all up to? Sorry, I can't really get the idea.. perhaps I'm too lazy to understand :D
I think what should be fixed is in the source code of the nuke trajectories, which i believe no mod could change. wrong :?:

Nope, that's not possible.

This map, however, is.

Hey if me and zanzer just made a land units map, anything is possible with maps :p

The idea is that using a polar projection would do a huge amount to reduce the insanity of nuke arcs...and it would allow players to choose between firing over the north pole and the south pole...
basically if your trajectory wrapped around the world from right to left the assumption is that you're using a south pole trajectory...
if it went across the middle of the map then it would be a standard polar trajectory that would fly directly from US to russia...

likewise you could sail your ships near the arctic waters...

we're exploiting the fact that missiles wrapped from the left to the right for roundness reasons and are using it to "simulate" proper polar trajectories...
it isn't perfect--but it should be fun, especially for the canonical US-Russia battle---without having to worry about Europe getting in the way of the nukefest

also if someone made the map we could try rotating it in photoshop until the best angle appears that makes SA and A fun to play...

Ohh, I see.. you want just to make the map like this.. :) but still, what happens to the trajectory? it will still be (unrealisticly) curved as looked from above.
if players "choose" to fire over the south pole, the missile is not going to be visible for some time (while flying exactly above the south plole), unless you make a polar projection of the entire earth, which I did not see in the pictures. Don't get me wrong, I really support the idea of realistic flights, but just don't think this is the way

Hmm, with all these polar/spherical/cylindrical/conical projections, one starts to wonder if our Earth is really round at all

and that is how we know the Earth is banana-shaped

ni!

but seriously...the idea is to rotate the polar projection until the curved arcs look good for most sources and destinations...
I bet if europe is at the bottom it will work just dandy, look awesome, and give us those cold war scenarios we've all been craving
