Modding question...

Hey I dont talk much on these boreds but I read everything :) I've made a few graphic mods for some units of my own, and I understand most of waht everyones doing (map mods, graphic mods, sound mods, etc).

Now i've been concieving this mod idea in my head since the whole modding scene developed around here and I was wondering if the following idea was possible. In theory it sounds like it could work...

When modding a map is it possible to make units like radars and silos placable on the "ocean" if the land map overlapped parts of the ocean map. Thus making it so "planes" and "boats" could cruise down the ocean but also have solid units there too?

If this is possible I could very easily start said mod but I dont want to get my hopes up just yet.

Thank you very much!

Hmmm, not sure, could you paint the ocean there in the land bitmaps, but draw it as land and unsailable in the sea bitmaps? If thats what you mean?

sailable.bmp is what makes you able/unable to sail/place buildings at any given point ... and since it has to be black & white, it's not possible to have buildings and boats at the same place. Not for now at least, sorry.

... Or is this just me being completely wrong?

Makes sense, it would show up on the map as land. Unless there are some cheeky hacks you can use to get it working, might need to play about a bit mate

You're right. I just knocked up a proof of concept. Where buildings can be placed is determined by the mask of territory and the inverse of sailable, this mask also determines if a city is placed on the map. Where naval units can be placed is determined by the mask of sailable and territory. It seems the grey area on the territory maps is just decoration, it could just as easily be white.

OK thanks guys. I didnt realize that sailable.bmp determines where land is and water is. I thought that sailable was just the sailable portion of the mask and there was another file for the inverse... In order to achieve what I want in my mod I managed to come up with an alternative. Thanks again :)

This a change to the gameplay concept, or some neat little trick you've found?
