Dimmer explosion mod

Postby Ranma13 » Wed Oct 04, 2006 4:45 pm

Not much of a mod really, but I got tired of explosions masking the units/cities/structures underneath, so I opened up the explosion.bmp file in Photoshop and changed the opacity to 35%. Download here:

http://finalranma.imap.cc/explosion.bmp

Save it to ...\Defcon\data\graphics\

Ah, explosions!

While I quite like the fact that nuking a city makes it glow brighter than ... well, bright ... I agree that it makes it quite a bit harder to figure out what the heck was just hit :P

You know, by adding a bright thing ring around it's perimeter, it'd almost look like a shock-wave ... and you'd be able to count how many times in a row something had just been hit. Just a suggestion.

Might look weird when planes fire at each other, though

And with the fact that radiation and population (and maybe some other) options uses the explosion image it'll just look ugly if you add a ring around the explosion. But that's just my opinion :)

*Loads up Defcon with ring explosion*
*Realizes he's made a fool of himself*
*Hides under table, weeping*

I agree it can get annoying when you can't seen silos or airfields under the bright white circle. I won't be downloading this yet, but I have a feeling I will soon enough.

P.S.- what tools do I need to open these files to alter them?

Look in your Defcon directory. There will be data.dat and sound.dat. Open them with WinRAR or any program that can read RAR files.

The link does not work.

Anyway... how do I add this in the Steam version?

This thread was last active 7 years ago. It is unsurprising that the link does not work. Seven years is a long time on the internet.

Presumably the way that any other mod works: add it to the mods folder. There are instructions somewhere on the forum that can probably be found through searching, though you might first look to see if there are any stickies that help.

I recognized the age of this discousion. I just wanted to ask for a re-up^^

And I have read the discousion about mods in Steam but the advice is for Mac users and the path differes from mine. But I have wrote a question there now.

Install MODs by unzipping them here:
C:\program files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\Defcon\Mods\
