Language Mods

Hi!

Are there any language mods out there yet?

If not, i try to make a german translation, if anyone wants to help me, post in this thread...

I also have a problem with repacking the main.dat. When i use a Modified one, the game crashes on startup. Does anyone know how to repack the file right?

You don't have to. Just make a "data\language\" foler in the defcon directory and put the language txt there.

well. if i do that defcon says: "fatal error: text file contains more than 65536 characters"
and it dosnt start
so wahat you gonna loose? you know you come from nothing, you are going back to nothing... so what have you lost? nothing!

hey there - I've already started on a German translation of the game. Did most of the ingame info. Sadly most messages tend to get to long if you translate them - especially things like "multiple launches detected", where a translation will simply cover most of the screen. Also there are some problems with German Umlauts (ä,ü,ö) - the font does not support them and you always get a not so nice looking Arial version of them within the text.

but anyway - if you want to team up for the translation I'd be happy :) You could start with the tutorials - although we should think about some namingkonventions.

I am also working on a translation, but I can't seem to find an option or a config file entry to switch between languages. Anyone got a hint?

have already translated about the half of content to german.
but the program crahes when i try to place radar stations.
with the english.txt it works fine.
dont know why, so my motivation on completing the translation is pretty low.

The fact its only half done may be the problem. I noticed when making my Donkey mod that if you change for example:

english.txt wrote:unit_silo silo


To say:

english.txt wrote:unit_silo monkey


Placing a "monkey" will lead to you having an object with no info. That is because later on under unit info this:

english.txt wrote:unitinfo_silo Functions as Nuke launcher and Anti-Aircraft Platform.\n\n+ Large supply of Long Range Nukes\n+


no longer gets called. The game is now looking for:

english.txt wrote:unitinfo_monkey Functions as Nuke launcher and Anti-Aircraft Platform.\n\n+ Large supply of Long Range Nukes\n+


Although in my case it didn't cause a crash but something of similar may be causing problems.



Also, a note to the person who had an error about character lines when starting Defcon. You don't need to rar the files back into main.dat. Leaving them in the data\language folder is just fine.

i've already released a german translation yesterday:

@cerealkiller: i know, it's very hard to translate some words into german! they are sometimes tooooooo long or sounds like $#!t and bablefish or google translation didn't really help!

@failtec: had same problems first too! first i used a english.txt which was the spanish translation and i was working to change it into german! but then i readed to open the .DAT files with winrar and ... ah, the untouched languge file! so i translated the original english.txt and it works!

I have finished a Dutch translation, which can be found at [ur]http://img.portal42.net/defcon/dutch_incl_fixes.txt[/url]

I also changed some dirty mistakes, like the \n tag, in the Lobby Overlays. The \n caused a line to get written when the cursor was on the next page... Find it here: http://img.portal42.net/defcon/english_tweaked.txt

Be aware that a hash is used for comments. So don't use it in the middle of a line! (I used it for showing an amount, in # Kanalen.)

On switching languages, you could use the ModLoader. If you want the language files to be swappable and the mods not to be affected by those, you'll have to use your dirs in a creative way, or make your own app. I was planning on doing it, but not now, please...

We need other language mods than actual languages, too.

Like a personal.txt;
Launch detected = You're fucked! (all credit goes to y0kk3n)
Milan hit, 30M dead = You let 30M die in Milan
Silo destroyed = You suck at defence

or an aol.txt;
Launch detected = zomgno!!
Minsk hit, 1.2M dead = Minsk got pwnd @ 1.2M
Silo destoyed = lol wut

... You get the idea ;)

You know, it's possible that I might make some kind of overall Defcon loader, where language could be specified as well. If it's wanted, that is ~ But there isn't much point to it for now, and to be honest I'm quite satisfied with the simplicity of the ModLoader as it is

I never didn't? (ugh, double negative)

Anyway, I haven't got around to collecting language files on defcongame.tk yet, sadly. I've been very busy, and I still am as a matter of fact.
