Crashing on Mac

Postby Oly » Wed Oct 10, 2012 11:00 pm

There's no Mac subforum so let's try this here...

I've just bought Defcon for my Mac from the Steam store and it's crashing every time it launches. The game loads, gets to the spinning globe, seems to possibly be authorising and then it crashes out. Hunting around this does seem to be a common problem and people suggest editing a preferences file to set RenderLobbyEffects to be 0. However I can't find a preference file with that anywhere on my system. Using grep turns up the binary file with that string and that's it.

Can anyone tell me where to find/make that file for that config value?

Has anyone had this problem with Steam and then got it working?

I can provide the crash dump if that would help.

My Mac details:
21.5" iMac
10.7.6
AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB

Thanks in advance for any help with this. I loved the demo on my PC and wanted to buy the full version for my Mac.

Not me, I don't know anything about the Mac. But it definitely is supported.

I think the preferences file is somewhere in ~/Library, but that's all I can remember, and I never had the Steam version on Mac. Search the forums for it, there are other support topics.

OS X is definitely supported, somewhat ironically if I were running the Windows version I'd probably have an easier time in ripping the thing to pieces and working out the problem...

Looking into this some more it appears that I've got the same problem that someone posted about here:
http://forums.introversion.co.uk/defcon ... p?p=119988

It crashes showing a Steam Authentication Status dialog (with the spinning globe behind) and a message at the bottom of the screen saying "Authentication Status Key Invalid".

I've tried the permissions thing on the folder that seemed to work for that user for a while but I get no joy at all.

/Users/xxx/Library/Application Support/Steam/logsservice_log.txt shows this which suggests something's up with Steam authentication as well:
Fri Oct 12 22:39:30 2012 UTC : Failed to create Service pipe (60)
Fri Oct 12 22:39:30 2012 UTC : Failed to connect to Steam Service (60)
Fri Oct 12 22:39:30 2012 UTC : Failed to load Steam Service (2)
Fri Oct 12 22:39:30 2012 UTC : ServiceStart: failed to start (2)
Fri Oct 12 22:39:31 2012 UTC : Failed to create Service pipe (60)
Fri Oct 12 22:39:31 2012 UTC : Failed to connect to Steam Service (60)
Fri Oct 12 22:39:31 2012 UTC : Failed to load Steam Service (2)
Fri Oct 12 22:39:31 2012 UTC : ServiceStart: failed to start (2)
Fri Oct 12 22:39:39 2012 UTC : Failed to create Service pipe (60)
Fri Oct 12 22:39:39 2012 UTC : Failed to connect to Steam Service (60)
Fri Oct 12 22:39:39 2012 UTC : Failed to load Steam Service (2)
Fri Oct 12 22:39:39 2012 UTC : ServiceStart: failed to start (2)

Deleting the auth key from /Users/XXX/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Defcon/DEFCON.app/Contents/Resources doesn't help.

Deleting the entire app and reinstalling from Steam isn't helping either.

Any more suggestions?

i have no mac and no steam, but i guess you still have a permission or firewall problem here. okay, i am not a cpu freak, btw.
nearly same happened to me with windows and with the normal defcon key.

I don't think that it's a firewall thing... I've turned off my local firewall and some of the protection on my router and I still can't authenticate. The Steam app itself and Crusader Kings 2 (the other Steam game that I have, I'm not very reluctant to buy more) are both fine.

Do you happen to have any idea on what destinations and ports the app might be trying to connect itself to? I'm going to try and find a packet/network sniffer to see if I can spot anything but any information to help me out would be very much appreciated.

I might also try firing up an old Windows computer and see if that can handle Steam, that will at least confirm if it's something at the router or Mac level...

Thanks again.

It works fine on Windows XP, so presuming that that version uses the same ports as the OS X version then it's not an issue with my router. The fault would therefore seem to lie with the Mac either with some setting on it or with the app itself.

Running some network sniffing on my Mac shows it talking to:
Mac to Valve at 72.165.61.187 port 27018
Valve to Mac on port 53490
Mac to Introversion at 107.20.157.139 port 5008 (twice)
Introversion to Mac on port 5009 (twice)

The final few couple of requests are back out to Valve and then to Twitter on 199.59.148.89, hard to tell if that's the app or Steam. Those two requests don't get responses before Defcon crashes.

So things don't appear to be being blocked, and the final two requests that don't get responses are to and from ports that have previously worked.

So basically I've not learned very much by doing this other than I can use my creaky old XP machine if I want to.

These jokers are NEVER going to fix this are they?

I've emailed Introversion help a couple times. The first time they sent me a link to the prison game's forum...well done boys. Thanks for actually READING my email.
I'll never by another product from this company.
