Must Enter Authentication Key Every Time

Postby ShannonBrown » Tue Jul 19, 2011 12:50 am

Windows 7
DEFCON 1.6

I installed DEFCON. When I open DEFCON, I am prompted for the Authentication Key. I enter the key printed on the back of my manual. I press APPLY. The key validates.

However, if I close DEFCON and re-open later, I am again prompted for the Authentication Key.

How can I make the key "stick?"

In the Defcon folder, is there an Authkey file? If so, open it and see if the key matches or is a demo key.

As a more general note, it sounds like you may not have write privileges to the Defcon directory. You should check to make sure that you can modify files. You may need to run the game in some kind of compatibility mode, or as an administrator. Remeber that Defcon is a relatively old game, and may not play nice with Win 7.

Still need to re-enter Authentication Every time!

Postby bschuck » Tue Dec 06, 2011 3:55 am

I just got the Humble Bundle version of Defcon. In order to enter a game, I need
to re-enter the authentication every time. It does not seem to stick for me either.
I tried changing the read/write permissions without any changes to having to
re-enter the authentications. Any more ideas what the problem might be?

If you have Windows 7, did you try right-clicking Defcon and 'run as adminstrator' as xander suggested? This should work as it will allow Defcon to make changes (thus creating the proper authkey text file for next time).

Can you point to thread? I might have it somewhere, but I'm too lazy to do any proper looking (on here).

Try this: http://www.sendspace.com/file/t2fu1t

I did not look at the actual mod files to make sure, so I'm assuming it's the correct mod folder. :P

Just adding to this, if for some reason you need to manually create the authkey file, type out your authentication in a text file called 'authkey' in your Defcon directory. Then rename it and delete the file extension (.txt). Just running it as administrator is the easiest way to go.

Unrelated editorial: I have been using Arrowsplosion for quite a few months now. Big fan.
