DirectSound Error

Postby DraGGon2k » Thu Dec 23, 2010 3:27 am

Hello,

I've purchased DEFCON as part of the Indie Mix Bundle from Steam and whenever I try to play the game(currently in tutorial) it crashes after I'd say max. one minute with the following Error:

=========================
= BLACK BOX REPORT =
=========================

Defcon 1.6 STEAM built Jul 22 2010
Date 3:3, 23/12/2010

ERROR : 'DirectSound ERROR
..\..\contrib\SystemIV\lib\sound\sound_library_3d_dsound.cpp line 626

Direct sound couldn't set buffer volume
Error Code : DSERR_BUFFERLOST
The buffer memory has been lost, and must be restored'

retAddress = 0044165C

First I had winamp running in the background but even after I shut it down I still get the error in DEFCON. I don't have this issue with any other game.

That's a new one. There are just two thinks I can think of:
- the usual, try to get the most recent drivers for your sound card
- try disabling sound and music from the game menu. Umm. I can't remember whether that is possible properly.

No there's no option to disable sound and even if there was that's not a proper solution. Once again: Everything else runs fine. I can play music, play Black Ops and have two videos running in the background with no error, so why would it be a hardware-related issue?

There are some sounds options you might wanna try to play with.
- sound library -> maybe there is an alternative to direct sound?
- hardware3D sound -> disable/enable
- channels, frequency -> set to low values

also try updating your sound driver, maybe Defcon is utilizing a feature your other games aren't.

here's the solution to your problem, you're gonna love this: For the game to start you need to plug in some kind of audio output (i.e. headphones or boxes).
