Hi all.
I'm running defcon on windows 7 and its running slow. I've tried all the obvious things, like setting the resolution low and detail. I've installed the latest patch too. But it's still crap.
Can you help?

I don't know if this is still the case, but I seem to recall that Win7 lacked proper support for OpenGL. As the game uses OpenGL for rendering, this could be causing problems. The solution is to update the drivers for your video card, preferably with vendor provided drivers (rather than the ones that MS ships with Windows).
If that doesn't help, we are going to need more information.
Read this topic, and follow the provided directions for generating a DX diagnostics report. Post that information here.

Would I have to buy a new driver?

No. Just head over to the manufacturer's page of your graphics card, current drivers should be there ready to download.

I've downloaded driver thing. Its still running crap.
I don't know if this relates in some way to it, but I brought the game from the shops. Every time I start defcon it asks for my auth key, even though I entered it before and it said it was valid.

It also sounds like Defcon does not have permission to write in the directory that it needs to write to. I don't run Win7, but my recollection is that Defcon needs to be run in some kind of compatibility mode to work properly. Have you tried that?

What's a compatibility mode?

Google is your friend. And you still have not followed the directions from the post that I have now provided a link to twice.

Just got Defcon today-- faced a similar issue, here's how I fixed it (updating my drivers, compatibility mode, etc., did nothing):
1)Go into "Options">"Graphics"
2)Make sure you're in fullscreen (ensure the "colour depth" option is there)
3)Turn colour depth down to 16-bit and apply
4)Turn it back up to 32-bit, apply
Not sure what exactly this does, but it brought me from being capped at 20FPS (no stuttering, just stuck at 20) to consistent 40+ framerates on 1280x800 with antialiasing on. Hope it helps

I'm in the same boat as Vuke.
Though this is an old post, I've come here with a fix. I've downloaded and installed the latest patch.
WORKAROUND
````````````
- Right-click the shortcut on your desktop and select "Properties"
- Go to the Compatibilities tab
- Run it under XP Service Pack 2
- Disable Desktop Composition
- Click OK
Game is running smooth as butter now.
