Single player not working!!

I've played this game for a couple of years now but have been away for a few months & now cannot get a single player game to start up.

I select New Game & where I used to go into a screen where I coulld select Bots etc now I just get a chat box pop up with a public tab and an alliance tab, nothing happens if I click on either of these, no other options available anywhere.

Anyone have any idea what is wrong? This has always worked in the past.

This usually happens when the net setup is blocking defcon somehow. Even for single player defcon is using a server / client setup.
