Patching issue

Well...

I was one of the first players to buy Defcon in a boxed package, and I've had it ever since. It's been around a few places... two harddrives, even stuck on a jump drive and played on school computers. I made sure to keep my game key in mind by writing it down on a post-it note and keeping it with the game.

Well, I decided to try putting it on my new laptop so I could play with the graphics (as I liked the minimalism capable... see all of my mods), and I tried entering the authentication key. Word-for-word, letter-for-letter, all of them were right but the game claims the key is invalid.

I don't want to suffer the demo, so what should I do outside of buying the game again? I've lost the authentication file that goes with the game. Is this game over for me?

Does it come up as "key revoked"? If not, I would email IV and see what they have to say, they can probably help.

Edit: I don't know about boxed copies, but I've had to go to the IV store and log-in to get my key again, in the past.

Hmpf. Tried the store route and copy-pasting the key from there and it seems to be accepted. Guess I'll have to check the post-it note... :\

Just remembered, if you put a space at the end inadvertently (it will let you), it won't accept it. It reads that extra space as a character.

I didn't type in any spaces...

ok, here's another issue. Patching to 1.6 gives me a "DeleteFile Failed; code 5 Access is denied."

I've unchecked the read only box on the folder, and I'm running the patch as an administrator.

These two threads may be helpful: (two in one)

So going to safe mode is the only way to install the patch?

I'll have to give it a go later since I'm using the computer that I'm trying to patch. Thanks Rimmer.

Let us know if that actually works.

well...

Started to notice slowdowns in my computer's operation and decided to see what was going on by bringing up my task manager. I found two instances of DEFCON running (Both instances when I tried to get the key working). Shut them down, operation returned. It occured to me to try patching again, since technically the operations would not be running.

Patched fine.

I'm not sure if my situation is different from Ram's, but it appears that I've been patched.
