The 82810E isn't exactly the fastest chip. Casual evidence suggests it was slow in 2004 already. Here's some things you may be able to do to improve things:
- Get your driver directly from Intel. It has a higher chance of proper OpenGL support, which is needed for this game.
- In the game's graphics details, disable Smooth Lines. This setting is known to cause trouble on various low-performance intel chips.
- In the graphics driver's control panel, enable VSync.

You don't have to buy a driver. Just download it from Intel's website. It's free.

Your computer is old (or, at least, the technology in it is). While it is technically capable of running Defcon, it is possible that, even with driver updates, it will still run it slowly. If this is the case, let this be a lesson: don't spend money without trying the demo first (there is a reason that companies like IV release demos---true, it is partially for advertising, but it is also so that people will know if their hardware can handle it).

Just taking a look at your specs its your computer that is slow as a turtle. What if you had went out and bought Crysis? Without first downloading the demo? Would you expect that to work as well? Perhaps at 5 seconds per frame? (or not work at all..)

I agree that Defcon is not optimized graphically and hogs system resources when it shouldn't.. but anyone with a halfway decent computer should easily overcome the defectives in design of the game itself.

Also, you overlooked these two things to try:
bert_the_turtle wrote:- In the game's graphics details, disable Smooth Lines. This setting is known to cause trouble on various low-performance intel chips.

Chances are they get you into playable territory.

And no, I wasn't suggesting you should *buy* a driver. Go to intel.com, the support section, and find an appropriate driver download there.

I hate crysis, I don't like it one bit.

Now, bert.

Where would i find the graphic control option, in the control panel or the computers hard-drive?

I think on WinXP you right-click on the background and select properties.

Usually, your control panel would be accessed by right clicking the Desktop, then selecting "Properties", then there's either a special hardware tab or an "Advanced" button. From there, you're on your own, I don't have the foggiest idea how the intel control panel works. A quick google says that the VSync option there is called "Asynchronous Flip".
Also, more click-instructions here: http://www.computerforum.com/148339-int ... -sync.html
I don't know whether you want the setting enabled or disabled. Just try both ways.

This will probably make things worse. It's software OpenGL, which means your GPU will do nothing at all to help. You'll want this, if I navigated the horrible intel download page correctly.

Yeah... that wasn't the point. The point is that you seem to have the irrational expectation that because you bought Defcon, it should work on your machine. Now, don't get me wrong---bert is very technically able, and might be able to help you get it up to playable. I wouldn't hold my breath, but it might be possible. The point of the Crysis comparison is that if you had gone out and bought Crysis without trying the demo first, it definitely would not have run, and you would have been SOL.

That is one of the reasons that many companies have a demo---it is a kind of "try before you buy." Of course, the companies are hoping that their games will run, and that you will be convinced to buy them, but it is also an opportunity to see if the games actually do run. If you have an older or lower specced machine (and your machine had relatively low specs, even when Defcon was released four years ago), then it is incumbent upon you to make sure that things are going to work before you spend money. If you don't, then caveat emptor.
