Can you post some troubleshooting information? There could be several sources:
- in the Defcon directory (<steam root dir>/common/Defcon, IIRC) there could be a debug.txt (remove authentication keys before posting) and blackbox.txt
- the windows crash report gives you the option to review the information it would send to microsoft. You can't copy/paste it, sadly, but it tells you which file it's stored in, so you can just open that.

Also, more system and driver specs would be good. Are you running the 64 bit edition by chance? Edit: oh yes, you do.

2)'Run ...' or the search bar in Vista
3)Type 'dxdiag.exe' in the 'Open' textbox and press the 'Ok' button
4)Once the 'dxdiag.exe' dialog is up, click the 'Save All Information ...' button.
5)Choose a destination for the file (ie: your desktop) and a name for the file (ie: 'dxdiag_info.txt')
6)Post the content of the file here.

Next in debug.txt usually comes the audio setup. So its maybe sound related.
Look for a sounds.dat in your defcon folder. If its not there redownload Defcon, if it is .. I dunno .. maybe new drivers for this usb-sound device?

I dont wanna give useless advices but I also would like you to play Defcon, so here is a simple idea, unplug your usb sound device before starting Defcon, just to see if the problem is related with it.

Dunno, can you disable *all* sound devices? By, say, removing their drivers?

Another wild guess, maybe there is some bug in the decompression of sounds.dat on your 64bit machine. If you extract all files of sounds.dat with WinRar and put them into <DefconFolder>\data\sounds\ and delete (or rename) sounds.dat Defcon doesnt need to extract them but should be able to start. (I tested it on my PC)

ok i will try those ideas, also are all the files installed into the defcon folder or are they installed into another folder? because i only have a few files in there and they are all pretty small in size? just wondering if that is normal

You would have to ask Valve. I am pretty sure that IV can't do anything to refund a purchase made through another company.

Whats about this?
- the windows crash report gives you the option to review the information it would send to microsoft. You can't copy/paste it, sadly, but it tells you which file it's stored in, so you can just open that.

In the last few cases this helped a lot to find the reason. Can you find something like this?
