atioglxx.dll problems with steam version SOLVED

I've just bought the introversion pack from steam, and am having problems starting defcon.
I get black screen, then error message:
I'm also the proud owner of 1.43 and steam beta, and they both run fine!
i like the stats and don't want to go back to 1.43!
windows 7 x64 all up to date
steam defcon
latest ati graphics drivers (10.6)
ati hd4890 1gb graphics card
do you need any more info?

OK - I solved it. Turned out to be a problem with the extremely useful 'ati tray tools' app. I turned off 'aggressive 3D detection' in the att options and all is groovy - EXCEPT steam authentification probs......
