Defcon and single player

I'm using zonealarm as my firewall and i have noticed, that whether i do not allow the game to access the internet, i cannot even play single player.

Why is this?

Because even the single player uses your local network, and apparently, zone alarm does not distinguish between LAN and Internet there.
