I believe this deserves a new topic for the following two reasons:

1. The two recent threads are not directly related, ie one is affliated with Dedcon(Wtf?) and the other has people bitching that the OP tried to install the beta.
2. This issue has been claimed to be resolved in an older thread, yet after a year later it's still a major issue.

You know the story, installed Defcon, tried to run it, now my key doesn't work and I'ma demo user blah blah blah.

I've contacted valve through their steam support 'Ask a Question' system and we've been firing back and forth replies for about a week now, and they've closed the thread twice without finding out if the problem had been resolved or not, to which I reopened it and told then "No, that didn't work."

Here's the list of things I've done, in order I tried them:

Restarted Steam.
Restarted my Computer.
Deleted the authkey file and let Steam generate a new one.
Deleted the entire folder in Steam and let it reinstall after a system restart.
Deleted Defcon completely from my system outside of Steam and let it reinstall.
Obliterated Steam incling all my apps and the registry keys and reinstalled Steam from the websites .msi installer and installed Defcon.

None of these have worked so far and Valve seem a little hesitat to give me a solution beyond these measures short of telling me to sod off and play a different game.

I'm not going to kick up a major fuss about this because I've got coursework constantly flying my way at uni so it's no big deal but I'm sure there are many frustrated users out there who haven't had a reply from Valve about this issue and Defcon is just sitting there unplayable past the extremely limited demo version.

I've also had a look around the Steam community forums- nothing there either.

What a nuisance, and I had such good faith in Valve. It's a tremenous shame their gaming platform, Steam, is a pile of wank

Sometimes the metaserver isnt working and a backup server jumps in, most users experience authentication failures in this time. When the backup server is activ your Defcon start screen says so. I suggest to let steam recreate your authkey and try it again.

I am no steam user and maybe this is more related to steam then to the metaserver issues.

I know, i just thought you did it while the backup server was in use, and you should make sure, you try, when it is not.
