Defcon not starting

Postby Earl » Fri Jul 25, 2008 3:08 pm

Hi, I've read a bit of this forum trying to find a solution, but it seems that each case is different, so here is mine.

I've bought Defcon via Steam, and when trying to launch it, after 3 seconds of black screen, it tells "Defcon cesead working, Windows is trying to find a solution", and of course finds none. I've wondered if it could be cause of Steam so I downloaded the demo to check if the issue was there, and i got exactly the same error. Let me copy the debug.txt files.

First the one from Steam (full game then) :

Defcon 1.43 steam built Jul 2 2007
Parsing archive main.dat...DONE
WinSock started
Client listening on port 5011
Parsing Coastline data (1776 islands) : 22ms
Parsing International data (2753 islands) : 9ms
Parsing City data (2745 cities) : 13ms
Parsing archive sounds.dat...DONE
Failed to load AuthKey : 'authkey'
Authentication key set : 'authkey not found'
WinSock started
Connection established to MetaServer, listening on Port 5009
Steam Authentication Initiated

Then from the demo :

Defcon 1.43 built Jul 3 2007
Parsing archive main.dat...DONE
WinSock started
Client listening on port 5011
Parsing Coastline data (1776 islands) : 23ms
Parsing International data (2753 islands) : 9ms
Parsing City data (2745 cities) : 12ms
Parsing archive sounds.dat...DONE
Failed to load AuthKey : 'authkey'
Authentication key set : 'authkey not found'
WinSock started
Connection established to MetaServer, listening on Port 5009

They look like the same. I've then thought about my Vista firewall, but I manually authorized Defcon in the security center, both of the executables. So here is my config :

Vista 32 (French)
MB Gigabyte EX38-DS4
Intel E8400
4 GB RAM
ATI 4850 HD Crossfire (I also tried disabling Crossfire)
Realtek onboard audio device (Azalia or something like that)
Onboard LAN device

I'll post a dxdiab.xml if you wish to check. Needless to say everything should have its drivers up to date, the Catalyst version is the 8.7 (officially supporting the 48xx), I've just updated my audio driver. Oh and the first demo I've downloaded was the 1.0 version, with still exactly the same error. I've also of course rebooted few times, tried at startup without any other important programm like Firefox.

I'm open to any suggestion, thank you.

Ok so I found it, here is the event log : http://shipon.free.fr/defcon.evtx

Looking at it, I read "module défaillant atioglxx.dll" (which means failing module), so my guess would be that it's the OpenGL component of the driver that is not working, knowing that I have the very last drivers (catalyst 8.7, released less than a week ago).

But that should mean that any ATI user with Vista would have this problem, and well... doesn't look like it.

Any idea ?

PS : I can play normally another OGL game (ETQW), I haven't another one to try but the component should be somewhat working.

Problem solved, I replaced the 8.7 ogl dll by the 8.6 one, and it seems to work. Thanks.
