I guess it's a network problem, have you checked your firewall?
Could you post an ipconfig output:
1) Press the 'Start' button
2) Select 'Run ...'
3) Enter 'cmd' (if on windows XP/2000) or 'command' (if on windows 9x) in the 'Open' textbox.
4) Press the 'OK' button
5) After the command prompt as opened, enter 'ipconfig'
6) Select the output and paste it here. (You may need from the menu that appears when clicking on top left corner icon the 'Edit' -> 'Mark' and 'Edit' -> 'Copy' functions)

Windows 2000 IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 3:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 24.184.36.205
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.248.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 24.184.32.1
not much.
i checked my firewall, it's fine, it allows defcon. still, would it need network access, even with a tutorial or rolling demo? would steam make a difference?

Yes, more or less. Defcon uses a server/client setup whenever you play a game. If it is a local game only, it still uses the local loopback, which requires that your firewall be configured properly, and that network traffic can get around your machine (even if the machine is not actually connected to any real network).

... well kind of. I have CA Security suite or something. i get it free with the internet from my isp. it has anti virus, spyware detector, firewall, all sorts of stuff, though sometimes it bothers me when every time i play a newly installed game that needs to connect to the internet, they pop up a window asking to allow or deny. I am SURE i didn't press deny by accident when running the game. I even checked my firewall advanced confg.
I think i might have the solution, well, not entirely.
I know xp has its own security suite, or "Security Center".
It too has a firewall, and it says on the bottom of firewall that
"Note: two or more firewalls running at the same time can conflict with each other."
/\< if this is true, why didnt it happen before? i played internet games and it wasn't the problem. this is where the "not entirely"comes in.
same thing happens in 2000, 2000 doesn't have its own security center, which is why XP became so popular (and its stylish colors)
man, im running out of ideas here
i wonder... but its gonna be risky, to turn off all the firewalls and see if defcon runs...

well, it didnt work, but now i got another problem, (no, dick didnt hack my computer) now CA thinks that i didnt install my firewall after i disabled it, enev though i re installed it and it shows up in the start menu, and works, but thats minor.
Defcon STILL DOESNT WORK, EVEN AFTER DISABLING FIREWALLS! WHATS GOING ON!?!??!?
I tried port forwarding, cuz if you have guessed, i have a hub that connects to my modem, so 2 computers can go online at the same time. still didn t work,
XP debug thingy (finally)

dont see any blackbox txt file, and when i click on join game, the server browser box pops up (as it should) and it says retrieving servers list, and then the xp ( defcon has encountered an error, would you like to send a report.. blah blah, instead of the annoying blue screen of death). quits defcon, and I sit there confused.
is life trying to mess with me???
I noticed something...

join and new game are the same, but tutorial and rolling demo seemed to have no errors, as if defcon just gave up trying to run. I've never been more confused then the end to No Way Out!
http://forums.introversion.co.uk/defcon/viewtopic.php?p=57181< similar problem?
All the other people that i searched with keywords CLIENT : DISCONNECTED have more under it, why does mine stop there? I also dont see my ip adre .... wait. i think i got the solution. I MAY GOT IT!@!!!!!
ok, it STILL DIDNT WORK!!!!!!!! BUT!, i think im getting some where. what i did was that because i was connected to 2 computers at a time, its obvious that both must share the same ip address, but because they are different computers, it somehow conflicted with defcon. so, now, i find a new debug you can now see, because i disconnected the other computer, turned the modem back on, and now i see my ip address.
