So, I used to play DEFCON on my previous system without any issues. However, on my new PC it simply doesn't work. If I click on New Game, Join Game, Tutorial, Rolling Demo, the game client locks up and then crashes to desktop. All my drivers are up-to-date. My specs are:
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz
Two Geforce 8800 GTs in SLI mode
4 GB RAM
Windows Vista 64-bit
I thought it might be a Vista issue, but others I've spoken to haven't had any problems running it in Vista. Compatability modes don't work either. So now I'm thinking it might be an SLI issue. I suppose I could disable the SLI and see if it works. Edit: It's not the SLI.
If anybody could shed some light on this, please do.

There was no blackbox.txt file.
I've updated video and sound drivers, reinstalled drivers, disabled and enabled various features, run the game without anything at all in the background, etc. etc. etc. I've done everything I could think of. I really don't wanna have to resort to installing Windows XP on this system, as Vista works great for absolutely everything except DEFCON.

I kind of want to put this on a novelty bumper sticker or a hat...
But seriously, it might be the fact that it's 64-bit. I know of several pieces of software that are way more commercial than Defcon that don't like 64-bit Vista.
Unfortunately it seems that in all cases it's a matter of waiting for the need to become widespread enough for the developers to make the changes. I would expect more Vista compatibility is coming, but I'm certainly not holding my breath. There's a reason I'm still using my old XP laptop while my brand-new Vista one has a generous coating of dust on it. Not that I'm complaining. It's like buying a natural gas-powered car and moaning because there isn't a station on every corner to fill up-- I had my reasons for getting it and I knew what I was getting into and it's just a matter of time before everything catches up. Right now I'm satisfied with it pretty much just being an expensive DVD burner that annoys the crap out of me whenever it gets the chance. Especially in the middle of the night when it wakes me up to ask me if I meant to turn it off...
But who knows, maybe someone somewhere knows a cool trick to make it work.
