So much LAG!!!!

Postby Legiondude » Mon Feb 04, 2008 5:18 am

Ello,I got the DEFCON demo for Windows and I got a problem

I have Windows XP(I think SP2) for EMachines and I've taken a copy of the game and put it on one of my school computers(I have a class that allows us a personal account to use on them) and it's Windows XP too,but when I played it, the lag was so much that even after I put the game on the lowest quality settings,I still couldn't finish a whole game.

What makes it wierder is that it works at perfectly normal speed on my computer.

Got any ideas for fixing this?

Other than telling us that you are running XP, you have told us absolutely nothing about the machines that you are trying to run DEFCON on. What kind of processors do they have? How much RAM? What video cards? Anything would be helpful...

Odds are if they're school computers, they'll have low-end integrated graphics, possibly without manufacturer-specific drivers. Odds are also that that won't be changing. ;)

@xander: :? Well sorry, but that sort of info is blocked from my access. Can't check even the properties of a bitmap with the system

The only other info I have on their comps is that they're mostly unaltered Dells which were made the Windows Vista, but it was so crappy with the schools system that they converted all of them to XP

Oh,just remembered,I think their processors are D Celeron or Pentium 4.

-------------------

What I was saying is that I have WinXP,I took the game to a school comp that also had WinXP,and it was incredibly worse. So I'm asking what went wrong.Simple enough for you to understand?

@pox:Yeah,it's probably that.*long sigh*Ah well,I got a classmate who's really good with the tech stuff(He likes reconstructing computers etc..) so I'll try him

I have a white PC at home, I took the game to school comp which was also white and it was incredibly worse.

The game perfomance almost fully depends on hardware and only slightly (not noticeable in most cases) on software. WinXP is exactly software and the fact that both comps you're talking about have WinXP tells NOTHING. To compare them you have to at a very least know info about hardware components such as:

-CPU (abr. from Central Processing Unit, also known as "processor")- title (AMD Athlon 4200+, Intel Pentium 4 for example), it's "speed" in hz (3000 hz, 2Ghz for example).
-RAM (abr. from Random Access Memory)- it's size in bytes (512Mb, 2x1Gb for example).
-GPU (abr. from Graphics Processing Unit, pretty much same as CPU but for graphics)- title (nVidia GeForce 7900GT, ATi Radeon X600Pro). Size of integrated -RAM and frequencies of RAM and core can be found out witha help of a title.

Until you have that info those two PCs you're talking about are just totally random comps.

Simple enough for you to understand?

I'm confused I tried defcon on a laptop (I think it was black or maybe dark blue) running XP, and then I tried it on another laptop which was black running XP and it was incredibly the same!!!! I don't know what to believe. Probably the programmers forgot to include the right code for some colours of laptop.

If I managed to get win XP (or any other OS for that matter) to run on a 80486, I doubt if defcon would start within a reasonable time, let alone run...
