Defcon won't run with Last.fm running

This is an odd one. I noticed today that while the Last.fm scrobbler tool is running, Defcon won't start. Not really an awful problem, I can just close Last.fm before starting Defcon. I'm just glad I figured out what the problem was. Here's the blackbox error message:

Odd... does the scrobbling tool play any sounds? I wouldn't expect it to... and anyway, I'm sure DirectSound allows multiple apps to use it at once... we're not talking OSS here.

Try downloading the standalone (i.e. not team) demo from introversion's website and see if it has the same problem. If not, then it's steam-specific.
