No C:\~\Defcon\Data Folder

Postby Yan » Sat Nov 03, 2007 11:00 am

Not sure if this should be in this forum or the modding forum but i looked for my C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\defcon\data folder as i woz interested in making small mod and i couldnt find it. A search for the various files e.g. russia.bmp turns up nothing and i dont understand how defcon can work if it doesnt have a data folder. i've enabled hidden folders and i still can t see anything. the folder i'm looking in is the same one that defcon saves screenies to and it contains the .exe, a folder called "mods" and a folder called "reslists". i dont know if i'm looking in the wrong place or if my particular installation is weird and if thats the case, wud reinstalling it off steam help?
thanks,
Yan

Defcon stores the stock game data in a single binary file. I know at least in the Linux version it's called main.dat. I'm not sure if you can extract it to get at the data.

but surely to mod, i need to get at the maps and sailable areas. i realise that i cant get at the hard source code coz IV haven' t released it yet, i'm saying that i hav no \data folder inside my C:\~\Defcon folder which according to Montyphy's guide found at http://forums.introversion.co.uk/defcon/viewtopic.php?t=3884 is where i should be able 2 find the editable material.

As you'll see elsewhere in Montyphy's guide, game data is stored in '.dat' files, which are really '.rar' files, and as such can be extracted by programs such as WinRAR.

you triggerd something in my brain, stupid Winxp was showing .dat files as a movie clip, so i disregarded them as something to do with the scrolling background. as a stab in the dark i tried extracting them with 7-zip and it worked. thanks v. much guys.
