Problem with windows demo, just sits there, no errors...
My problem has to do with the windows demo. The game looks great but I still want to try before I buy, you never know. Anyways, I downloaded the latest demo from your site, installed it just fine and ran it. It lets me change all the options, configure whatever I want, I hear sound just fine, and as far as I can tell everything runs great. The problem is when I try to start a game it just sits there. It says it is loading a game but nothing ever happens. It does not freeze, I can still hit the close button if I want to, and exit the program or retry to restart a game if I want also. It just wont actually start the game... I uninstalled it, downloaded the demo AGAIN and reinstalled it. Same problem! [arg! hehe] I clicked rolling demo, new game, everything, but it just sits there.
I played every new game, HL2, Oblivion, FEAR, Prey, STALKER, XIII, everything I could including the Crysis beta demo [though that didn't run totally smooth framerate wise], no problems. Never had a single error with any of those games. I am mostly looking into a possible game for my mac book pro [bought it 2 weeks ago] but I refuse to buy something that might not be fun after "playing it 5 times", if you know what I mean. So anyways, I am really looking forward to this game, my brother says it kicks ass but I can't get it to run. Please help fellas if you can.
I run a dual core E6700, 7950GX2, 2gb Corsair XMS2, blah blah blah, my system rocks. I played Oblivion at 1280 outdoors silky smooth, so I know it's not my system being "old" or slow. Any ideas? What should I post? Only thing I saw everywhere in these forums is the directx infos, so here's the copy-paste treatment:

One thing too for the Defcon webmaster: The page with the "patch" on it, does not tell me everything I need to know. Most times developers create patches for demos and ALSO patches for the full games, usually labeled as "demo patch" or "full game patch", your page just says "patch." So is it a DEMO PATCH? Or, is it the FULL GAME PATCH? Please update your site with this one text word so people know the difference. I might be sitting here making a help question, when the whole time I needed to patch the demo, I still have no idea if that's for me, or for people who own the full game. *sigh* [it may seem silly, but it is important]

.

The patches are for both the demo and the full game.
The file that may be useful to post is the debug log. It is called debuglog.txt and located in the game installation folder. What may be the problem (no expert in reading dxdiag output) is this bit:
Does this mean you have no driver installed for your network card? How is your network set up? Even in single player mode, DEFCON requires a functional network of some sort.
Have you tried to join a game? Try the "Join Game" button for that. If you join a game that is already in process, you will only spectate, so don't worry, you will not be thrown into cold water if you join without even having played the tutorial.

So I should patch it then, wish they would update that text. And what's this you are saying about needing a network? That was not stated on the download page either! Do these guys speak English, or are they foreign [not native english speakers]. Maybe someone screwed up in the translation part. Yikes!
I didn't buy a network card because my motherboard is awesome, but why would a D-E-M-O, of a single player game require a network, even for a tutorial? That's probably the worst thing I have ever heard. I wanted this game to play the AI, when I am traveling. Are you seriously telling me that I have to connect to some server somewhere, to play a SINGLE PLAYER GAME? If so, I am lost for words. I literally want to gouge my eyes out with something. Please tell me that's not it.

If you really downloaded the latest version, you don't need to patch, as the latest patch is already included. The latest version is 1.43 and that should be displayed in the lower left corner of the main menu screen.everyonediestonight wrote:So I should patch it then?
DEFCON is a multiplayer game, the single player part is only an addition. For multiplayer games, network hardware is one of the obvious components you need. The download page also doesn't state you need a monitor or a mouse, yet I hear no cry of outrage that you can't play withouteveryonediestonight wrote:And what's this you are saying about needing a network? That was not stated on the download page either! I didn't buy a network card because my motherboard is awesome, but why would a D-E-M-O, of a single player game require a network, even for a tutorial? That's probably the worst thing I have ever heard.
AFAIK, it works fine with no physical network at all (using the virtual network that is always there), but it has problems with certain not-really-functional network configurations. Or had. Some of the problems were fixed in 1.43. Anyway, just install the drivers for that network card thing that is included on your mainboard and you should be fine if the problem is a non-proper network setup.

You really should post the contents of debug(log).txt. (I'm not sure any more about the filename and can't check from where I am.)

The majority of games people play have needed a mouse and keyboard since Windows 95. You are trying to compare apples and oranges. And the need for a network is stated NOWHERE in the system requirements. It does state that a network is "needed for multiplayer", but the other 99% of single player games not distributed through Steam or D2D exclusively, don't require an online connection, even if it's just for activation. I would hope they AGAIN update the webpage to state these missing pieces of text. Had I seen the "network required to play the game", not "network required for multiplayer", I wouldn't have bothered.
>> Anyway, just install the drivers for that network card thing that is included on your mainboard and you should be fine if the problem is a non-proper network setup.
There are no network drivers, the motherboard doesn't need them. The newer motherboards don't need these, maybe the value brand or older stuff, but not the newer premium boards. I know this is something people are not used to, but the newer stuff doesn't need these. The developers should be updating the games if this is the case, so peolpe can play in the future. *cough* I have played every game out there almost, even played the UT3 demo last night without any problems. Defcon is broken, not my desktop.
>> No, I'm merely suggesting you do this for testing purposes.
I do appreciate it, I really do. I wanted to play this game. But your missing my point. I shouldn't have to post my network information for a game that doesn't require a rnetwork, for whatever reason. And if it DOES require a network for activation, or even for playing the tutorial, they need to update their webpage to let people know.
Seriously, thank you for your help, but without a developers feedback and obviously so much missing, this game probably doesn't hold a candle to solitaire. I wanted it to be fun, it looks fun, but I don't want to play something that is going to ask for hidden requirements AFTER I download it.

The majority of multiplayer games since then required a network of some sort. And apples and oranges are both juicy and healthy and yummy.everyonediestonight wrote:The majority of games people play have needed a mouse and keyboard since Windows 95. You are trying to compare apples and oranges.
Besides, DEFCON does not really need a physical network (just checked it), it works fine with just the loopback network. What is causing trouble for you may be that there is that a network card, but it is not properly configured. As I said, there were problems of that kind before and the latest patch addressed them, but maybe it did not get all. We could discuss for hours whether a game in single player mode should depend on the network setup at all, but that won't bring you any closer to a working game
For fully checking the authentication keys, internet access is required; DEFCON will run without it, but I don't know how for how long; I would assume infinitely, but I'm not in the mood to test that

Multiplayer games yes, not single player. At least none of the 100 or so titles [at least] that I have been playing since Quake 1 and Tribes 1, which were both also multiplayer, but *cough* didn't require a network to run... two games that were both written like a million years ago. Get what I am saying?

Which is again, retarded. It needs a network, even if there really is no network. www.wtf.com? I do appreciate your trying to help, I seriously do, but I already uninstalled it. I have no ineterest in a game with hidden system requirements.

I've played it on a computer with no network of any form whatsoever, the issue is an incorrectly configured/non-functioning network.
However, at this point we don't even know that that is the problem - please provide debuglog.txt if there is one in your Defcon directory, this will be of great assistance if there is any way to solve your problem, and will potentially help people with the same problem in future. If you make no effort to actually solve the problem by following the advice that is given, then being unable to use it is inevitable.

Defcon is not a single player game. Period. It was, in no way, designed to be a single player game. The AI is there almost entirely to take over for players when they disconnect, and to provide some basic training for new players. The fact that you can play against only AIs should not imply that Defcon is a single player game. It was not designed to be so.
That being said, you have been asked, multiple times, if there is a debug log. Is there one? Could you please post it?
Even when Defcon is being played "single player," it uses the network interface, even if it is not online. It uses the local loopback to get the server and client to talk to each other on your machine. If your network card is configured incorrectly, then it is possible that Defcon is not establishing that local loopback. A debug log would help to diagnose that.

This I understand, but you I guess are misssing the point. I realize that there may be some limitation their games have with using AI and needing a computers network card or something. I am not a developer, but here's the copy/paste from the DEFCON demo page itself:
"You may play the single player Tutorial, and you may play a single player game against one AI opponent." <There it is in black and white.
That sounds to me like after I download the demo, I should be able to play a game against "one AI opponent," and nowhere on the download page, or the system requirements page does it say "internet connection required to play demo." In fact, nowhere on the website does it say "internet connection required." It does state "This demo has working multiplayer, over LAN and Internet," but again I don't see the word REQUIRED, for singple player game or tutorial.
It may need some weird network thing to happen because the game was written that way, but where is that stated? It isn't. Same as the patch. It may or may not need the patch, but nowhere does it say "This is the demo patch," or "this is the patch for full game only." It may fix all the problems in the world to use some weird third party driver for a network card *that doesn't exist* on my system since the newer motherboards don't need one, but it is not stated on the website and therefor is wrong.

That's kinda funny, you just told me that there is no single player game, "Period." Well, every game has it's limits. Sorry for wasting your time. I do appreciate it again seriously, but it's alright. I don't want to have to troubleshot my system to get a game demo working, when every other game including more modern games run fine.

Actually, he said defcon wasn't intended to be and isn't a single player game. He didn't say you couldn't play in single player mode. There is a difference.
Also, you've yet to post a debug.txt, so whether or not it's a network problem is more or less an assumption based on the very little information you've provided. Thus, you are wasting your time arguing about it as it could very well be some other issue.

Meh, this may have started as an honest help request, but it has degraded into trolling. Don't waste your time. Each of everyonediestonight's statements could be argued over infinitely (100 games played without a single technical problem in a single one of them? Lucky bastard. Hardware that does not require drivers? Yeah right. Complaining that a game advertised as multiplayer game just downloaded from the net requires network, just hilarious. ) and I'm not stopping anyone to do so, but I'd rather spend my energy on something productive.

>> Internet connection for multiplayer games
Yes I see, it says MULTIPLAYER games. Say it out loud with me, M-U-L-T-I, not SINGLE... MULTI-player. I can be a bit tricky to say for some I know, but with some practice youll get it.

And heres the copy and paste from the Halflife 2 website:
"Internet connection required for activation."
I find it funny that you omit words here and there, or act as if the word "multiplayer" and "singleplayer" are the same thing. I wonder if you have ever played a single player game?
