Changing An Auth Key.

Postby Hyperion » Fri Sep 21, 2007 11:06 am

Hey, is there a way to change my auth key? i only ask because i lost connection in a game last night and tried to reconnect to the server in the 'filter'-'recent servers' list but i got a message telling me that my key was a duplicate and an option to play demo *shock*, buy game etc etc...which confused and startled me as my key is 100% authentic and it's never left this system or this house  the server was entitled 'unknown' and was still listed in my 'recent servers' this morning, i don't know if this is a common occurance? :? or if i'm right to worry  ...hence i'd like to know how to change my auth key for security purposes rather than take the chance.

Hmm. You used to be able to do it via the metaserver, but it appears that's no longer possible. It seems at the moment the only way to get a new key is to contact IV directly.

I would not worry about it for now, when you attempted to reconnect, the server may not have noticed that the connection had died, and thus had you with your key still logged in as an active user and refused the additional login attempt.

Hmm, i'm hoping that's the case. It was on a dedcon.

That shouldn't matter. It is the metaserver that tracks keys, not the individual servers. So, the metaserver probably just thought you were still online. You might try again now, and see what happens.

I matters, because it was on my DedCon Duel and I can have a look at the logs, and because it is the server's responsibility to make sure now two players are using the same key on it (the metaserver only gets sporadic information about key usage and rather looks for keys that are in use at the same time on different servers) :) Usually, DedCon recognizes in such a case that a new login from an already used key is not really a duplicate key, but rather a player attempting to re-establish a lost connection. Hyperion's IP address changed in the incident, however, and the server had not yet noticed the previous connection was lost, and that confused the system. No need to worry. I'll try to do something.
