Just noticed something weird with frames per second...

Postby Deezee » Wed Sep 05, 2007 9:37 am

When the chat window is up, I literally lose about 50 frames per second.

I have a dual core AMD 64 (3800+ I believe), an 8800 GTS, and two gigs of PC 4800 RAM (or something similar - been a while since I've checked my specs, lol).

Is this a known problem that I just now noticed? If so, is there a fix, or do you just keep the chat window invisible until you hear the blips?

It's a known fact that the chat window takes quite a bit of performance. What is your normal framerate? The relative drop, methinks, is what counts. Going from 60 to 10 is far worse than going from 600 to 550, not wanting to go into the debate of the sillyness of keeping VSYNC disabled here.

I go from 60-80 to 15-30.

I've been playing 15-30 all this time, just thinking that was normal... heh.

So is there no solution other than to keep the chat window minimized?

Dunno, on my far weaker PC (Athlon XP Barton 2800 or something, 512 MB ram, NVidia 6800) it never drops below 30 FPS even with the chatbox. What version of DEFCON are you using? It may help to play with the detail settings of the game and your graphics driver, but I wouldn't know specifics.

Playing with the Steam version. I haven't updated my video drivers since I got the card a few weeks ago, so I'll try that. This is something I've noticed throughout my entire play history though, (I always noticed that multiplayer gamers were choppier than single player - I thought it was just lag.) from before I even had a dual core processor or the 8800 GTS.
