"Attempts" error

Postby faceometer » Mon Sep 03, 2007 11:45 pm

Bit of a strange one, this - can't make head nor tail:

TWO GOOD FRIENDS, both with fully updated versions of everything, both have been playing Defcon over the web and loving it for some months

SUDDENLY, one day, neither of them can connect to a server hosted by the other. It stops on "connecting" and just goes through "attempts" infinitely until you cancel it. The really strange thing is that we can both connect to most other servers (some do repeat the error), but can never join the same one.

Nothing has changed in terms of hardware &c. since the problem started!

If anyone has any hints we'd love to know - Defcon is a favourite of ours and we're really misssing it!

What OS?
What version?
Steam or non-Steam?
Are they trying to use the same Auth key?
If they bought it from Steam have they attempted to play it without Steam and failed to renew the auth key every month?

Windows XP, 1.43 Steam, and no both versions are entirely legit. To my knowledge neither of us has played the game without steam in the past.

Care to post your debug.txt located in [Your Steam directory]\steamapps\common\defcon ?

*Post note that the debug.txt file is overwritten every time Defcon is started which means you must post the debug.txt right after having this problem.

You are sure both GOOD FRIENDS have the exact same problem when hosting and the other try to connect?

Do both GOOD FRIENDS have the same Anti-Virus/Firewall software and thus could have suffered the same software update which could have caused the problem?

Alright the thing is pasted underneath...

We always try with both of us hosting, one after the other. We do have the same antivirus, but we've tried playing with it switched off: no result. We can still play c-s:source and loads of other online games with each other no trouble...

Ahem.

Thanks for your help here guys!

Ok, nothing unusual in the debug.txt file (else that it's not connecting).

hmmm, this is strange.

What happen in this particular case? The first friend join the game and the second friend get an error message?

Are both of you on the same LAN? Perhaps one of the FRIENDs could change his Defcon ports (see preferences.txt)?

Code: Select all

NetworkServerPort = 5010
NetworkClientPort = 5011

To something like:

Code: Select all

NetworkServerPort = 5012
NetworkClientPort = 5013

(If you use a router/firewall don't forget to forward/allow those new ports)

There's no "error message", it just hangs on "connecting" for an infinite number of "attempts", whereas other servers we connect to straight away. In the instance above, I was the host and the other FRIEND was connecting (I think), but we both get the same thing...

When you said but can never join the same one., this means that even if neither of you are hosting you still can't join the same game? (In clear, the 2 friends can never join the same server even if they are joining a server hosted by a third person?)

Check the second part of my last message (about LAN and ports).

Are both of you are on AOL? (If yes, what are your respective IPs)

To answer the first part: correct. Neither can join the server the other one is on/hosting. To clarify things - the same error OCCASIONALLY crops up when either of us connect to other servers independantly, but ALWAYS when we try to connect to each other. So I've had several great online games since the trouble started, but none with my friend!

Re: the ports - I'm away for the day so I'll have to check that this evening. To my knowledge, though, nothing in our physical setup has changed since everything worked.

Neither of us use AOL; I'm on BT and I'm not sure what my friend uses, I believe it might be Virgin.

Have you tried to join one of Bert's dedicated servers? If you try join them, make note of the date and time; bert can look through his logs and work out why you're getting what you're getting.

Dedicated Defcon servers. If you look in the server listing, you'll sometimes see something like:

"Dedcon test TotallyRandom"
or
"Torigs Dedcon (default.brand new server)"

Join one of these servers with your friend. See if that works.

If you tell me your friend's KeyID (not the full authentication key, only the KeyID number that can be found in debug.txt, it cannot be used to steal his key) and his IP (let him visit www.whatismyip.com), I can wade through my logs and see what I can find. My servers are the "DedCon Test" ones.

And, hey, does this mean DedCon is more compatible to DEFCON than DEFCON itself? :) Probably not, the permanent DedCon servers just don't have a NAT thing between them and the internet.
