High latency for no reason?

High latency for no reason?
I have fast internet and a relatively good computer. Hovewhere when I join servers on internet - my latensy goes red in no time at all! Any idea what is going on?
"Fast internet" and "relatively good computer" don't tell us squat. When you say fast internet, do you mean cable? DSL? T1? 56k modem? What is your upload bandwidth? download bandwidth? When you say "relatively good computer," what does that mean? What kind of processor do you have? how fast is it? how much RAM? video card? OS? It would also help if you told us if there were any pattern to your lagging out. Does it happen when you host? when you join other people's games?
Remember, if you want your problem fixed, the more information you can give, the more we can help.

Internet is around 100 Mbps(For Lan or high speed).
640 Ram
2 GHz
128MB SiS 760
XP
Can join other games.
Latency goes like this usualy:
Green-yellow-red-keeps showing what I keep getting disconected-synchronisation-back to green
A.k.A. - Complete BS...

640 ram? That must be your video cards ram... ? What is your system memory? Right click on My Computer, select Properties. It's listed on the lower right hand side.
Do you have other programs running at the same time eating up bandwidth? Torrents for example? Check the task manager.
100 Mbps internet? Is that upload or download or is that just the capability of the line/network you're on, but not the true speed your internet connection is running at? (that'd by my guess) I'd suggest you take a speed test and see for sure. Something like here.
Example, my work PC is on a 100 Mbps network, but as for internet...

Good enough...

Thats an odd number to have. 512+128? 256x2+128? (just curious now)
Any other programs eating up bandwidth? Torrents, other downloads, streaming programs, etc, etc...
Also, are you running any programs that record? I have a PC monitoring program that can cause what appears to be lag, but is really just another program taking resources away from Defcon. Fraps is another program that gives the appearance of lag.
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast...
If you have cable internet, that's a connection that you basically share with the whole neighborhood, so you might notice a drop if everyone's going on Limewire at once. Also, if you happen to be connecting by WiFi, same deal if the connection is unprotected and a lot of people can connect to it. Even one or two people can affect the connection if they're downloading bootlegs of Spiderman 3 or whatever.
If you have DSL (through the phone line), you should be okay unless the phone lines stink. Where I live the lines are so bad that I only get half what I'm supposed to and the connection drops when the wind blows...
If you start eliminating things, that's the best way to find the culprit, although I know how frustrating internet connections can be.
Good luck.

Defcon System Requirements: Pentium 3 Processor, 600 MHz, 128 MiB RAM, GeForce2 video card, 60 MiB HD, internet connection (for multiplayer games)
Just out of curiosity, what kind of frame rate does Defcon run at on that SiS760? "The SiS 760GX graphics is adequate for most business users, but may not be suitable for multi-media, games, or graphic design work."

To take this further, press F1 to get a FPS counter on the top left.

Just reading the title of this thread immediately made me think of graphics problems; I have the same thing with my poor laptop. You will find that, as soon as you start to notice any lag, if you zoom in to somewhere where there's nothing going on (say, a blank bit of ocean), you'll go straight back into the green again. Some other tips for keeping a decent framerate without taking all the CPU:
-close the chat window when you're not using it.
-obviously, reduce the graphics to a minimum.
-swallow your pride and lower the resolution.

Here is my signature. Make of it what you will.

I have no problems playing with AI though...
Well - I got graphics on minimum and now games play at 20-21 fps(as opposed to 15-16fps)
And I though DEFCON could run on computers from 1995...
So yet again - those bastards(although I do thank them for new motherboard) couldn't find one which wasn't as bad?
