Problem installing patch 1.42

Postby Rogviler » Fri May 04, 2007 3:44 am

Has anyone else had problems installing the 1.42 patch? During setup I get this message:

"An error occurred while trying to replace the existing file:
DeleteFile failed; code5.
Access Denied"

I tried redownloading it, but it still does it.

I've never had a problem with any patches before.

I believe that error means you had Defcon running when you tried to patch it.

No, it's definitely not running. I've been through about four updates, so I'm pretty familiar with the process. I've never seen that error before with any program, much less this one.

If it's just my computer then I guess I'll just wait for the next update...

Thanks for the reply.

A quick Google search of DeleteFile failed; code 5 definitely looks like Defcon was still running. Perhaps make sure in the task manager defcon.exe isn't listed, then install the patch?

Edit:
webdoc.zoovy.com wrote:DeleteFile failed. Code 5. Access denied. This error typically means that the application is still running. You may need to hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE and end task. If you are rebooting, make sure that your computer is one which does a hard reboot rather than a soft reboot. Soft reboots do not actually close the running applications, even ones which have crashed. The best way to ensure that you are doing a hard reboot is to simply turn off the power to the computer.

As a general rule of thumb, just restart the thing, then try. If the game was running, then the problem would be solved.

Yeah, I hadn't even played Defcon at all since my last restart and I tried restarting anyway... Bizarre.

I think I'm going to wait until the next one anyway, even though I'm stuck with 1.4, which seems to have some interresting quirks...

Beats me.

I had the same problem, but have the solution.

For some reason, the process for defcon was not ending when defcon closed. To end it, go to task manager, find the process. (It might be easier to order the processes by memory used, and look for the ones needing the most). End the process, ignoring the warning. Then install.

Natch!

When Defcon is in Windowed mode clicking the red X doesn't terminate Defcon.

Latest Uplink patch is v1.55.

Alright, so I couldn't find any reason for the patch not to work, I don't use Defcon in windowed mode, I hadn't played since my last restart but I restarted anyway, both soft and hard... Didn't see anything in the Task Manager... Could be an issue with the program or just some random unrelated problem, I don't know.

So if anyone's having the same issue the thing that worked was to install the patch in Safe Mode (reboot and press F8, select Safe Mode). Not something I would normally do with most programs, but most programs don't have problems installing.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
