Windows Vista and Geforce 6600 + Defcon = Bad performance

Wel,

I installed the latest driver from NVIDIA and it's still slow.

Probably a driver issue, but wil OpenGL eventually really be supported with windows vista?
I think microsoft is banking on DirectX 10 as the number 1 3D technology for Vista.

Anyway, hope it will get fixed soon by NVIDIA, their drivers seem to be lacking descent support for OpenGL at the moment.

And when is the Linux version of DEFCON released, that solves my problem immediately

Thanks,
Stainless

No. Never.

To elaborate - the reason why the current Vista drivers for many cards only support DirectX is that their foremost aim was compatibility with Vista, and compatibility with Vista requires DirectX because Vista uses it for its GUI. However, major card manufacturers aren't about to alienate the graphics platform used by major game releases (such as Doom 3 and, uh, Defcon).

I would not be so sure of that. For instance, for Ti4200 cards, Nvidia will not be releasing specific Vista drivers ; you get stuck with the vista default driver, which as pointed out, does not support OpenGL. Maybe OpenGL support will come in an updated Vista driver for that card (and others suffering from the same issue) otherwise a lot of games will remain unplayable...

The very fact that many games will become unplayable necessitates support by major card manufacturers, if they don't want to alienate their market. The fact that there are 2 major card manufacturers makes it likely that pressure not to be one-upped by competitors will ensure that OpenGL supporting drivers come along quickly.

Yes, but not for old cards. Nvidia has announced not to create a vista driver for ie the GeForce Ti4200.

It's not because the game becomes unplayable that it in their minds it will necessitate support. They'll just tell you "sorry your card is really too old. You should get a new one. It's not our fault, but our old cards didn't get the Vista certification.. Evil Microsoft, evilll. "
