NAT/Firewall problems? Possible solution.

Postby Eran- » Mon Nov 13, 2006 9:26 pm

Okay, let's start from the very beginning.

At first, I have to say that I'm quite embrassased. I made too fast move when I posted the earlier post located in here.
Sorry about that.

And second, the explanation that could hopefully and probably help somebody to fix his/her problem.
For me it was quite a surprise that this worked. I just turned my firewall off. Doh, so simple? Well, lets take
a closer look to examine this surprising turn-up.

#1 ) Try to enable your port forwarding from your router settings.
if this doesn't work, move to part number 2.

#2 ) Okay, this is going to be a little bit more ardurous one. Probably it might be that your firewall is blocking your UDP connections,
and that's something we have to fix up. You can find out if your firewall is the devil to this occurence by disabling your firewall for a second.

If it worked and defcon.exe is on the firewall's list which allows the program's access to the Internet, it might be the same I mentioned earlier, that your firewall is blocking UDP/TCP connections in general.

1. First, open up your command line. (Win + R -> cmd.exe)
2. Type "ipconfig" -> enter, and check your local IP address, not your router IP address.
3. Open up your firewall (in this case, we'll be examining F-Secure, since I don't have any experience from other firewall apps. sorry.
NOTE: if anyone has idea how to make this work on other firewall apps, please post them here!

4. Find your firewall settings' rules.
5. Add a new rule, name it for "Defcon rule" for example or whatever you want it to be shown.
6. Permit its' access to internet.
7. When you need to put IP addresses etc., you need TWO addresses: the one that is your own PC's address, and the one
for the game servers. For the second one, I checked my firewall logs to check out, what IP address my firewall was attempting to block.
7.1. IT IS NOT RECOMMENDENT THAT YOU ALLOW ALL IP ADDRESSES THROUGH YOUR UDP.

-> 80.175.29.66 this is what I found from FS's logs. It seems to be the IP address where the game fetches the game servers' list.

8. When you have inserted your own IP address, and the IP for the Defcon game servers, save settings and start Defcon.

This guide is not so good yet, but I'll try to make a slideshow or screenshots with instructions some day.
If you have any improvement ideas, just post. :)
