Hi - I just purchased DEFCON and installed it at work - which has a very tall, very thick firewall.
I wanted to know if there was some alternate way to authenticate my install, without an internet connection - or if there was some way to transfer an authenticated install from my home machine, where I don't have the same problem.
Thanks much.
Authenticating my copy of DEFCON without a connection?

If I'm wrong and it's some other issue, I'd love to hear about it.
Try hitting the close button in the key input dialog. Not abort, but close. Defcon has three authentication states: DEMO, UNKNOWN, and ACCEPTED. If you input no key, it will be DEMO. If you input a valid key, but Defcon cannot contact the metaserver, it will be UNKNOWN. If you input a valid key, and hit the metaserver, the status will be ACCEPTED. The UNKNOWN and ACCEPTED states are basically the same -- you can play the full game. The difference is that the UNKNOWN state is offline, and subject to future verification, should you come online at some point. The keys have algorithmic properties, so if you have and input a valid key, even without hitting the metaserver, Defcon should be unlocked.

This is an old thread, but came up when I did a search, specifically looking up what "unknown" means. I have a shoddy DSL connection, and am glad that I can play the full version versus the CPU. There is one other authentication status that I know of, and that is KEY REVOKED. Seems to happen when there is an update and/or I haven't played in a looooooong time. I originally bought through steam, but always play the "pure" version, which usuall requires me to once in a while open defcon through steam, have it assign me a new key, and then input that into the "pure" defcon game.

No, it happens once a month. Steam keys are revoked and reissued once every month.
