windows crash on startup

Postby cappisman » Sat Sep 30, 2006 3:32 am

today, after much glee in the fact that i would be able to play defocon today, i downloaded the demo thorugh steam, installed it, and attempted to get it to run.
unforutunatley, after the screen goes dark, and looks like it's about to run, windows crashes.
i have a dell latitude c600 laptop, p3 750mhz, 256mb ram, plenty of hard drive space, and an ati mobility rage card..not sure much aobut the videocard, but i do have the latest drivers.

I would guess either your pc/card simply is not up to running the game...or your could try running it some kind of different resolution.

I hate to say this, but you desperately need a hardware upgrade!

i do need a hardware upgrade, this laptop is temorary.

anyways, this time i attempted to run the game at 1400x1050, the regular black screen came up, then a bsod flashed and then rebooted. also, a error window came up pointing the finger at the ati graphics driver, so i suspect and incompatibility.

i think the videocard should be just enough to run it, because it runs games such as halflife without much hassle.

Sorry, but Defcon is very graphically intensive. You really need to have fast hardware to run it.

regardless, it is above the minimum requirements outlined in steam itself.

anyways, i checked the video card and it's specifically an ati rage mobility m3. not sure if it's 16, 32, or 64 mb at the moment.

Slightly incorrect. Any ATi card in a laptop that isn't prefixed by an X is about as good as a nVidia TNT, or not very good. ATi doesn't support them anymore themselves, so it isn't minimum spec.

oh, ok, i just assumed that it was rougly equivilant to a geforce 2. i recently got this laptop from someone as a temporary fix as i work on my desktop, and i'm unfamiliar with ati's earlier cards.

I am running it on a Voodoo3 2000 and it runs fine

I think the OP's problem is related to something else
