Admiral Yoshi's MOAR Tactics

Postby Admiral Yoshi » Sat Aug 14, 2010 7:13 am

It was on SFCON 2 vs. 2 Random.

South America = Admiral Yoshi
North America = (I forgot... :? )

vs.

Africa = Mogwai
Asia = jon

My fleet was set up in groups of three. Two of them were to hold off Mogwai's main fleet while my third group was to make a pincer attack with my bombers. Plus my main fleets will have the silos and the airfields to back them up and to cover fire them. A good plan right? Yes. But there are a lot of things that I miscalculated... :?

1) Mogwai's immediate use of his fighters
2) My Carriers inability to escape
3) My northern fleet is way too far
4) My bad use of bombers
5) My premature fighter attack

Although that didn't really cost my entire fleet, it costs me most of my bombers, 5 Carriers, 9 Battleships, and 2 Subs. And here the lessons I have are in these set of rules when in a state of DEFENSE against enemies:

1) Whenever you want to retreat...always have a escape route!

My Carriers were set very near to the coasts of Argentina. When Mogwai sends in a fleet of fighters, they didn't attack till they saw my Carriers and let me tell you that was a complete disaster!

2) If you don't have the available firepower to overcome an enemy, DON'T ATTACK!

At that time, I want a complete counterattack so I send my 8 Battleships to attack but then when I know that Mogwai's bombers are attacking me, I have to retreat.

3) When naval nuking, always predict the path of escape and NUKE!

Mogwai sucessfully wiped out 5 of my Carriers because he knows that my Carriers are escaping to the northern Atlantic Ocean.

4) Silos and airfields must back up a fleet.

Because my silos will shoot down the bombers and my airfields will bring more reenforcements, Mogwai never attacked me again (or at the least I was thinking). Instead he switched his objective to the northern Atlantic Ocean.

5) Do not leave your bombers out in the open.

I did that and that didn't sucesscully worked. Mogwai shot down 5 of my bombers just from my nothern fleet.

6) When making a pincer attack...make your timing and position right!

Mogwai attacked my fleet from the southeast. My pincer attack was from the north, but is too far away! I can't correctly pincer Mogwai's fleet and the battle was lost from here!

7) HAVE FAITH!!! Faith always brings the ultimate endsieg (endsieg is German for "final victory").

I was immediately scared at DEFCON 5 when facing Mogwai, because I know that he is one of the BEST naval DEFCON players ever!

NOTE:

1. If you don't believe me, Mogwai is my witness.

2. This tactic won't always ensure EVERY VICTORY but is to ensure the survival of your fleet (most of the time or maybe sometimes).

3. mvpe's comments are below!!!!!! READ THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A PERSONAL NOTE TO MOGWAI:

Thanks for the experience. The spam of fighters caught me off guard! Well, thanks for the great fight and God bless! :D

Nice summary. :P
Anyway, I watched that battle. Mogwai crushed you, but this will happen even to the best players, depending on the position and setup of the fleets, when the encounter begins (see mvpes post).
But I was more disappointed about what happened after that. Most times after such a big conventional attack there is a small opportunity window of retaliation. The opponent will retreat to refill his fighters, so did Mogwai, thats when you can strike back with naval nuking. You tried, but you have to follow the retreating fleet, far enough so you are not in his radar range, but close enough you can figure his position with fighters and to kill the leftover fighters he might send. When your bombers are ready and they are in range you strike with a nuke carpet, not with single, dodgeable nukes.

For the rest of the game your struggled fleet huged your coast? Why? You had roughly half your fleet left, not bad actually. You secured your silo launch, good. But why you didnt make some use of your fleet? Did you wait for Mogwai to come back to get all of it? Mogwai lost almost nothing in the encounter. When your full navy had no chance then half of it wont do any better. Instead you could have used it (and the nukes in it) somewhere an encounter with Mogwais main fleet is unlikely and/or to protect your sub launch. If you think the game will run long enough you could also go through Pacific into Africas back.

That were my thoughts watching the game.

I think you could have used your coastline better, by that i mean dont place directly on the shore but further away so you can back in to it
witch is great way (especially under silo and radar cover) to nullify some of the fighter waves. That gives you more options, a static fleet like you'r in
this engagement cant really take the initiative.
The pincer attack was a great idea, but as you said it was to far away, you didnt send any scouts so you had no information to base that placement on,
me on the other hand knew exactly where the bulk of your fleet was witch i could exploit.
Attacking manner like i did only worked as you lack the experiance to handle it properly, and if i've had another opponent in the same place i would
have done it diffrently. But your a fast learner Yoshi so i bet next time it wont be as easy

I played far from good in this i made plenty of mistakes myself, i was planning on making another attack to finish of your fleet but, i found your
subs with them dead, i really saw no reason to follow through on that attack.

Keep it up.

Two things I decided to defend and not run after Mogwai:

1) I overestimated his size of his fleet.
2) I thought that he escaped to where I can't catch his fleet.
3) I don't have sufficient amount of Battleships under my disposal.
4) I don't have enough fighters to make a significant attack.
5) Mogwai could have just naval nuked my fleet if I were to make a counterattack. What's the point if you're going to lose your fleet?

Yea...I overestimated a lot but that's because Mogwai is an elite player!
