Naval units which block each other
Sometimes this happens with allied ships - they get in the way of your own fleet! Also I think sometimes my own fleet blocks itself, or moves slower than it should. Anyone have advice about this, or seen this?
I've been known on online games as Prokofiev Pirate on Myth: TFL and Myth II; The Egressor on Halo 2, and Foibleson and Halo 3.
Yeah, it's common knowledge among experienced players. If you get too close to allied, or enemy ships, you will slow down considerably. Especially if you're going in opposite directions. Experienced players can often tell when they're passing over enemy subs, or entangled with an enemy ship before they're visible, at Defcon 4.
You won't get slowed down by your own ships, unless you're going over your own subs.

There is no slowage from own ships.
And subs don't affect anything at all, so there is no way anyone (experienced or not) can "detect" enemy subs with just passing over them.
Oh and lastly, fleet won't affect each other until Defcon 4, when they're actually visible. I have no idea where Why? got the idea of fleet entanglement before Defcon 4. It's clear to see that your ships move at full speed at Defcon 3, but once defcon 4 starts and enemy ships are placed on top of each other they slow down when D4 starts...

Actually, ships do slow each down as soon as they make contact, whether or not Radar is enabled (Defcon 4). I.e., in Defcon 5 they can slow each other down. It's very easy to tell when a player has placed a scout ship close to your own scout ship, in Defcon 5.

well I haven't tested it specifically, but after playing thousands of games I've never seen defcon 5 slowdown. I might be wrong, but I always see ships slow down the very second D4 hits.
Maybe I'll test it soon if I'm bored (which I always am...

Honestly in my experience it happens sometimes but not ever.. Sometimes my scout bs is really slowed at defcon 5 but at defcon 4 i can see that there isn't any enemy navy on my way.
Anyway there are also some ocean areas where navy or subs go more slowly, for example in the south indian ocean, when a ship goes from south australia to south madagascar, i have the real impression of a slow travel.
ships definitely hit each other and slow each other down before defcon3.
If I see a ship of mine moving slowly at defcons 4 and 5 then I know that there is an enemy ship there and avoid placing any more units near it.
Most people probably don't notice the drop in speed because the game speed is often at level1 at that point which makes it difficult to spot.
As soon as the game speed goes up a level it is very noticeable.

Agreed. An easy way to determine if your ship is being slowed in open water is the object trail, which some of you may have turned off.
