diplo stages

Postby Protect and survive » Sat Apr 12, 2008 6:31 pm

In diplomacy i have noticed a seires of stages that runs throughout a match. Stage one: A player defects. The defector is thus punished.

Stage two: Another player defects and allys up with the other defector.

Then the period in between stage two and three is marked with very intense compitition.

Stage three: most likely 3x3. One side consists of the defectors and on the other the greens.

Stage four: The final defector is always the winner!

Am i right or am i wrong?

...Alternatively

Stage 1: I am kicked.
Stage 2: My population is reduced to single figures.
Stage 3: The timer runs out before anyone can do anybody else any significant damage .

......Or.....
Stage one: You find a VERY good ally via PM'ing or played a lot of games with him/her.
Stage two: Via PM'ing again, you with your ally decide on who you will boot out (usually experienced player or the player who can harm you the most) so the newbies and such will waste their nukes on him
Stage three: You and your ally leave the alliance with most of your arsenal/units left.
Stage four: Grab a beer or drink a nice cup of tea and watch as you or your ally win
Stage five: The end.

The final defector is always the winner though! Is this the rule? Or are there exceptions? :?

I see the most patient players winning time and again in diplo. It's a lesson in restraint and proper planning. I've won with 99 and almost no nukes fired. It's possible, with good pm chatter to play folks off and get away with little nukage.

A new one... :D

1: I am kicked
2: Y Mind Bender (under an alias  ) sets his dogs on me :x .
3: Said Y, er, thingy takes out all my 'stuff' while I'm occupied fighting various navies.
4: Y oh Y declares "U R NOW IMPOTENT, BITCH".
5: I vow vengeance>
6: My pop. is reduced to single figures  .
7: I rally my forces for an assault on BENDER'S territory - he uncannily decimates them with a few nukes  .
8: Finally, as an anticlimax, his dogs turn on him, knock him off the top spot, etc. etc. he moans about us all being noobs, leaves, the end  .

Heh...always know your enemy ;)
And finding Mind Bender actually PLAYING (well...trying to play) and not chat-spamming on a diplomacy server - shocking.

No...not always. Unless the server is full of newbies who have no idea of the main point of diplomacy.
On the other hand, if you know the player and that he's REALLY good in diplomacy and you don't have a decent ally - you find someone via PMing to boot him from the alliance and then provoke the newbies and such to waste their nukes at him, thus making you the last defector.

I don't know if it's actually Y Mind Bender (TM.) but yes, the person I'm referring to always does place his silos in a horizontal line, and tends to use the word 'bitch' a lot. Also, when he takes out someones silos, he usually declares them 'IMPOTENT' (something Dr. Freud might have a thing or two to say about  )
ps: talking of mistaken identity: :x

I haven't read through every post in this thread, but the best (and most fun way) to play is as follows...

  1. Play Premium Diplomacy, regular diplo is for suckas!
  2. Place subs first, move out of future radar coverage
  3. Place bb's on top of or near neighbors subs/carriers
  4. At Defcon 3: Kill subs/carriers
  5. Select one player to launch against
  6. Make secret pact with all players, allowing you to freely launch at defcon 1
  7. Defcon 1
  8. Do not defect
  9. Launch silos at victims ground units (hopefully they don't defect right away)
  10. Watch with glee as (99% of the time, for me anyway), victim loses all/most all ground units minutes into defcon 1

*make sure to get permission from any neighbor that can shoot down nukes, makes it easier to get a ceasefire/alliance with them in case you get kicked.

Sometimes they kick you, sometimes they defect first, sometimes they just sit there and try to figure out how to stop the nukes, while allied. Hilarious every time, unless somebody backstabs you in the middle of it. Then it's just normal fun. :P

WARNING: can cause inexperienced players to hold a grudge

Hehe. Honestly, it is part of a larger strategy, which sometimes includes wining. :P

I have actually seen the "victim" win on several occasions, even after losing all silos/airbases having never fired any silo. How? Cause the whole psychological effect of "that guy's no threat, I'll hit the other guy instead" takes over until everybody else's score is lower than the "victim" and nobody has the means to make him/her drop out of first any more. Plus, that player usually doesn't apply their naval forces very well. Play a game with only a navy, and see how far you can get.

I did, once, by accident. Was fun too.
