Practise V CPU

Postby MegaDeathKill! » Fri Jul 27, 2007 12:31 am

Has anyone here found that they improved in online games after practising V CPU? Does playing against the CPU make you a better player, or is it a complete waste of time? (I'm aware that the tutorial is useless and merely teaches you bad habits).

Any experience is better than none...just bare in mind 2 things -

a) The CPU is largely aggressive and will teach you either to be a very defensive player or a tough son of a b*tch.

b) Don't mimic the CPU's strategies...ever

I would say yes.

I play the comp a lot to practice precision silo launching, as well as bomber maneuvers.

Though I agree with Feud that cpu dummy is good for target practice, I voted 'no'. Tactics of a cpu and tactics of a human is very different. You can improve your micromanging skills with a cpu but aside from that - no tactical experience of playing against cpu will help you in a battle against another human.

True. One easy way IV could improve the AI is to have the CPU group it's silos instead of spreading them out.

I wish there were a training mode in the game which would allow me to place cpu's units myself.
This way it would really help to improve your gaming skills and create tactical situations that I want to reproduce for training.

That's a really good idea, maybe it can be implemented in the next patch?

I don't think that IV will ever change the CPU or tutorial (and rightly so).

Why? Well, why should they? Really. The CPU is there ultimately as a filler and debugging help/tool, nothing else. Practicing against it will yield very little in my opinion unless as stated above you're practicing something very specific or trying to sharpen a skill in a particular area.

Why practice against the CPU (full game strategy) when it's much more effective and much more fulfilling to do so against a human/group of humans? In short, I voted no.

can't you use the dedcon server to place silos then essentially save a game--have the CPu take over....
I remember reading an article where bert did that successfully to test AA fire

Wrong in part. The CPU does enter multiplayer games, after drops or people just quitting. Having a CPU that's slightly higher on the intelligence scale than a mollusk would hence be a great addition to multiplayer. That alone should be enough motivation for IV to change/evolve the CPU into something better than what it currently is.

I also voted no however, for the other reasons indicated by Ace.

The ultimate solution, as mentioned in the past, is probably just for IV to provide a way in which people can script AIs.

Well, for newbs like me at least, the CPU provides a good way to learn the basics of the game before going online to join proper multiplayer games. I guess the computer is supposed to be easy to beat so it won't be too challenging for the [DEMO]NewPlayers :)

That would be the filler part.

... and I was just feeling good about how I whipped the snot out of the CPU a couple days ago (my second full game). Turns out it's no big deal :(

I just got DEFCON recently - really enjoying it so far, though I've not gone up against any humans opponents yet. I still need to work on my micro-skills a bit more.

Your first post :D welcome to the forums! just look at it this way...feeling good about beating the CPU means you'll feel amazing when you beat some crap players and then imagine how you'll feel when you beat some really good players  it also means you've got alot more depth left in something you (im assuming) just paid for :)

Look forward to playing you on the servers
