I'd agree with Caranthir, and for the big games, you just need them out of sight of your enemies radar or prying fighters.

I am new to the game but i tend to use , with good results (against cpu):

Smal groups of 3, or squares of tight 4 silos ,radar in back or middle.
I also like if territory allows, to put 2 parallel, really close lines of silo, straight in direction of target, straigth line
With this (last one) i usually opel the last, wait 50 sec, open the next,...
