Best silo setup?

Postby Radiant Caligula » Mon Jun 04, 2007 9:45 am

Dammit, I'm going in 10 mins, but the defcon whore I am I just had to post a final strategical insight.

I have played this game for 9 months now and I have tried a lot of different silo setups. I mostly place them nice and tight and try to protect every silo as much as possible. But I must say the most potent setup for variable units mode I have tried is this: 3x3 tight triangles + 1 fill in. Place them so that both the small triangles face flat out to the main trajectory lane and try to place the group as a whole in line, fill in with radars. I fired 10 silos from NA at cities only and almost nothing got through at the strong side. Had I spread them a bit east and maybe a little lower I think I might have stopped almost 100 nukes from doing any major damage.

What is your most potent silo setup (def/off)? This is mine:
(disregard everything but the silos as this was just a test game... :P )

I think my favorite setup goes without saying, yet I will say it anyway. My favorite is the so called "Feud" style, which can be seen here:

I actually didn't invent it, I borrowed it from someone else I played back in Novemeber (whose name has long escaped me). It takes a lot of firepower to punch through it, and it can deliver a mean barrage of ICBM's on the enemy.

Yes, the six silos around one radar is my favorite. The only problem is that I have a hard time doing it as Asia, without putting it over a city. I guess one of the reasons I like North America so much is because there is a lot of room to not put it on a city, followed by South America.

As Europe I don't use it, because the room is so small. I'll usually put three on Iceland, two on England, and another somewhere else.

But everything except Europe, I use your setup Feud.

My favorite is the "Star of India" while allied with Africa (though it's not necessary). Sort of a "reverse Feud" style. Below is an example, disregard the silo over the city. I've been using it against all the new players with 12 subs (6 groups of 2) crammed up against the coast meant for Russia. Your naval fleet doesn't have to engage anybody and can then (once silos/subs/bases) are used up move on to the Americas in full force.

You must have worked hard on getting that one perfect, Ace.

I myself am going through a phase of big triangles. In the southern hemisphere generally point down, and pointing up in the north, but prevailing circumstances can change that. They seem to cover more ground defensively than Feud's standard setup, meaning that you can take out some of the 'chancer' nukes people launch at your far-flung places.

Not sure I should be sharing this kind of thing with a tournament still on, but I expect to be smeared all over the place in that anyway.

Actually I just stumbled upon it after trying to defend Bombay with Feud style setup. I just rearanged it a bit to compensate for massive bomber waves that may come in from Europe and/or Russia.

It's most effective if Russia/USA get caught up trying to figure out where in the world everything is and concentrate on east Asia. Even more so if Russia puts its bases way off in eastern Russia (where their fighters can't reach India quickly) Just nestle your carriers close to your silos and you got all your firepower (All bombers, All subs, and All silos) concentrated for maximum offense and defense.

Hm, it tells too much. By his legs he is heading east, so Africa can easily prepare for an attack. I would not recommend that for diplomacy mode.

Clearly, xkcd must be recreated with silo placements and the whiteboard.

The best silo placement is the one that your enemy is not expecting; you need no more than that.
