If you group your silos tightly, there isn't really a problem.

Just group your silos somwhat closely, and make sure that when you switch to launch mode that you switch the silos furthest from your target first. This will make those icbm's fire first, so they can make up a bit of the distance before the closer ones launch (don't give it too much time though).

As for a "standard way" of doing things, there really isnt' one beyond your personal preferance.

Not really. The first post is only about 1 page long and explains it pretty well. All we are discussing is a particularly effective way of launching silos, especially when attacking enemy silos.

The video could be seen to demonstrate many of the tactics you've raised, though:
  • Set silos up in a triangle formation with the base perpendicular to the path enemy nukes for defensive purposes.
  • Group silos close so that groups of nukes are tighter together.
  • Synchronise silos so they fire at the same time, and thus nukes land at the same time.
  • Organise strikes in 'packages', so that, say, the 10th nuke of each silo lands at the same target.
  • Attack the closest silos first, so you haven't opened your nukes up to attack.

The original thread and the video along with it was, after all, meant to demonstrate how to be particularly effective when launching silos ;)

I am on dial-up so I didn't watch the movie. I did read the thread, which really had nothing to do with any of this. But like I've said before, I would definately not be surprised if others had brought this up before. I actually have barely played DefCon, it was really the first thing I noticed about the game.

sorry for saying this, but this mechanic is really simple to explain. No need to write words to explain words that didn't explain anything in the first place. :( I will now sum up all the million sentences about "targeting with packages" etc in 1 paragraph:

Place your silos in a tight formation. If you feel safe open up all silos to make them ready. Fire the silos in the back first and fall in with the rest. Target in sequence: To make it easier pick the 3 first targets and fire all the silos in the same order. Repeat for the next targets in line. You shouldn't necessarily target the closest ones first, but the targets that will meet the most likely trajectory.

There. Sumd'up. Done deal. This could have been your initial post, DD...
Why drown people in words when you can give it to them straight?

Well, you haven't effectively described it in your few sentances. Not at all. My version was based on over 20 years of experience writing for gamers:-)

I really have bent over backwards to be nice, but you people really are just a bunch of assholes. I won't bother posting in this forum again, it isn't worth the trouble.
