BALLISTICS CHART here!!

Postby Radiant Caligula » Wed Mar 07, 2007 7:20 pm

---------------------------------------------------------------------O
DEFCON: Everybody Dies
>>> BALLISTICS CHART<<<
by Emperor Radiant Caligula
v1.0 (18/11-06)

O-------------------------------------------------------------------O
EXPLANATION:

I placed 5 silos on each continent – 1 dead center, and 1 North/East/South & West.
I then fired the silos to the center silo on each continent.

I did this to generalize the flight times. So you won’t find detailed flight times from the European western silo to NYC f.ex. This is supposed to be a reference chart you can use to time your attacks and show if your “Victory timer” launches will impact or not…

The first column displays launches made from all the center silos
targeted at other continents.

Note that the trajectory list cancels each other out, i.e. center->center flights only needs to be measured once (F.ex: RUSS<->ASIA)

O-------------------------------------------------------------------O
CENTER TO CENTER LAUNCHES:
(all values in minutes except the NAVAL chart)*
...............................................................................
SA<->NA--->11
SA<->EUR------>15
SA<->RUSS------->20
SA<->ASIA----------->25
SA<->AFR---->14
...............................................................................
NA<->EUR---17
NA<->RUSS---->21
NA<->ASIA-------->24
NA<->AFR------->23

EUR<->RUSS--->5
EUR<->AFR------>7
EUR<->ASIA------->12
...............................................................................
AFR<->RUSS--->9
AFR<->ASIA------>11
...............................................................................
RUSS<->ASIA--->9
...............................................................................
*The in-game clock was used for measuring…

These times are ESTIMATES, meaning that they are mostly correct,
But keep in mind the placement of the silos and the universal targets.

Time it takes to launch 10 nukes from silo starting in Air Defense Mode: 20 mins

** The northern NA silo was placed in Alaska, the western in L.A.

*** The nukes from other continents were always aimed at the center except
when I fired at Russia. When shooting at Russia I used Moscow as target because most nukes will statistically impact closer to this spot than the Russian center silo…

Hope you appreciate the chart and that it will come in handy for expert players and serious nukers.

Great work.

Fun cartoon. If it were made with an American slant, one of the commentators would have said "Nuclear weapons don't kill people, children who launch nuclear weapons kill people."

SUB MRBM’s flight time at maximum range: 7 ½ mins
Time it takes to launch 5 nukes from sub starting in passive sonar mode: 10 mins

Thats interesting information. So 17 1/2 minutes if you wanna have every single sub-nuke to arrive at destination ;)

It's not like I'm keeping this chart open all the time, but some of the flight times have won me many battles. I see lots of players out there launching way too late or even to soon.

It would be hardcore if somebody tested travel times from and to every major city and likely silo placement area, individually, and programmed a simple calculator with that data. Basically you'd have like four dropdown fields to easily select your territory/launch point and enemy territory/target point, and presto. More specific, more accurate, and quicker than wading through this mess of data you have going on here (not to say I don't appreciate the effort that went into it. I just printed your charts).

I agree it's alot of numbers. But having some of the key figures stored in my skull harddrive gives me an edge over newer players. Such as the planes airtime and central flight times is very handy to have in mind when rushing the victory timer in a tight game. I have won countless battles because I simply had the best co-ordination/timing and knew the best routes.

Playing with vets is always a rush to the points anyway so you don't really need it then. But if you end up with a pro showdown, pre-intel provides some comfort. You don't have time to even use a calculator in the heat of battle, knowing f.ex that SA to Asia have the longest flight time shows you your launch window. If you have 50 mins left on the timer and some bombers just in range of Tokyo, that might just win you the game. If you see you won't make it, redirect... I've seen so many noob launches and bomber runs that were completely pointless. If they had skimmed this list they'd know better. ;-)

No worries, this was a good bump, I added it to the sticky.

If you have anymore be sure to let me know, and I will add it also.

Apologies for the bump, but if you want a ballastics chart generated, you could write a very very simple bot to do so. It should not be very hard (for someone smarter than me) to work out an algorithm to calculate impact time from that data.

I know that this is a big bump, but I'm finding this information useful. To make it quicker for me to find the timings, I plotted the naval times (approximately) into a map. The curves are just curves, and are not representational of the actual voyages, although they should be going in the right general direction.

The larger time (in italics) is for submarines, the smaller for carriers.

In that case, I apologise unreservedly. I simply thought that, as I found it useful, other people might do.

Sorry.
